COSA

CHARGE TO THE COMMITTEE FOR OUTREACH AND SERVICE ACTIVITIES (March 17, 2006)

Central to the Wisconsin Idea is the translation of the knowledge developed within our scholarship mission to practice.  The primary mechanism the School of Education has used to facilitate this translation is through our training of pre-service professionals including classroom and special education teachers, school psychologists and counselors,  rehabilitation counselors and psychologists, principals, superintendents, as well as the next generation of scholars who are prepared to train pre-service professionals.

The other mechanisms the School of Education uses to engage in the translation process is through outreach education and service activities in the form of professional development, continuing education, and pre-college programs for a wide range of individuals and organizations.  These activities take many forms from very informal consultations to structured training programs.  This variability allows us to be responsive to the needs of learners who are not within a structured undergraduate or graduate program, but it also makes it difficult to support and track our effectiveness in this important area.

Given substantive changes in the context in which the School of Education provides these translation services (e.g., PI34, technological access to information, and distance education) it is vitally important that  the Committee for Outreach and Service Activities (COSA) take a leadership role in making sure we understand and meet the needs of SoE constituents.  To that end, COSA is charged to fulfill the following responsibilities.

The Committee shall:

  • advise the Dean on policies and procedures related to the Outreach and Service mission of the School of Education
  • advise the Dean on the status of Outreach and Service activities provided by the School of Education
  • advise departments and other employing units on the development and implementation of their Outreach and Service Activities
    • create and maintain a guide to the provision of Outreach and Services Activities
  • review and implement recommendations by standing subcommittees of the Outreach and Service Activities Committee, which currently include the following subcommittees
    • Credit Outreach and Extended Day
      • This sub-commitee will oversee the SoE's application review process for credit outreach and extended day proposals through the Division of Continuting Studies and mae recommendations to the SoE Dean for Continuing Studies
    • Professional Development
      • This sub-committee will track the professional development needs of in-service professionals, the availability of offerings to meet these needs, and make recommendations concerning relevant SoE offerings
    • Continuing and Pre-College Studies
      • This sub-committee will track the service activities of the SoE and make recommendations concerning relevant SoE offerings
    • Service Activities
    • This sub-committee will track the service activities of the SoE and make recommendations concerning relevant policies and procedures
