The School of Education promotes a conceptualization of education, research, and public service that spans international borders, has global reach, and embraces open inquiry, innovation and social justice. The goal of this committee is to ensure well-coordinated international initiatives and opportunities that span research and practice, and that have administrative, faculty, staff, graduate student, and undergraduate student participation. Global Education initiatives will occur on campus as well as nationally and internationally. A focus on global awareness and critical inquiry is central to the School of Education and to the activities of the Global Education Committee. GEC will foster connections and dialog across departments and programs within the SoE and will connect with broader conversations and initiatives about global education campus-wide, state-wide, nationally and internationally. A primary goal is to support visibility to all and inclusion for all.
This committee serves as an advisory group to the Dean, and is composed of: one faculty member from each Department within the School of Education; a representative from WISCAPE, Education Outreach and Partnerships (EOP), Education Academic Services (EAS) and International Academic Programs (IAP); a Chair; and an ex-officio seat for the Associate Dean of International Studies.
The Global Education Committee of the School of Eduation has a modest amount of resources allocated to it by the Dean each year to use as "seed money" to encourage the development of projects, courses, and programs with an international focus that will benefit students, faculty and staff in the School. How to apply.
The Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER) is providing funding for the 2011-2012 academic year to promote international research by UW faculty. The goal is to stimulate extra-mural funding for research on educational policies, initiatives and practices outside of the U.S. The funds will be available to persons eligible to serve as principal investigators at WCER, i.e., faculty and PhD-level academic staff at UW-Madison.
It is a condition that those who receive this seed funding must apply for an extramural grant for the research project through WCER in the same fiscal year in which they receive this WCER funding.
The Global Education Committee will review applications at its monthly meetings beginning in November (meeting are held the 2nd Wednesday of each month; proposals are due a week prior- see schedule below), and will award funds on a first-come, first-served basis. We will continue to review proposals until the funds have been expended.
The proposals should be brief, no more than 3 pages, and should include a description of the nature of the project, the amount requested, a listing of how the funds requested would be spent and the specific extramural funding source(s) to be approached. All funded projects must take place AFTER the committee meeting date in which they are approved.
In considering the merits of each proposal, the primary GEC criterion is the potential for the project to be awarded external funding.
