Seed Funding/Request for Proposals
The Global Education Committee of the School of Education has a modest amount of resources allocated to it by the Dean each year to use as "seed money" to encourage the development of innovative projects, courses, and programs with a global focus that will benefit students, faculty, and staff in the School. This allocation is not intended to support programs over time, but to develop new initiatives that will prepare our students for a world that is diverse, global, and interconnected.
We are particularly interested in supporting proposals that will benefit students and faculty throughout the School rather than those that just benefit a few individuals, and will prioritize those that lead to ongoing program offerings. We are also interested in supporting projects that may lead to additional funding by others or to an expansion of revenues for instruction (e.g., attracting new students from other countries, providing new study abroad opportunities for students). Examples of the kind of projects that are eligible for funding or partial funding include (but are not limited to):
The Committee invites proposals from faculty and staff in the School of Education that further the goal of globalization within the School. The committee will review applications at its monthly meetings beginning in October (meeting are held the 2nd Wednesday of each month; proposals are due a week prior- see schedule below), and will award funds on a first-come, first-served basis. We will continue to review proposals until the funds have been exhausted.
Proposals should be brief, no more than 2-3 pages, and should detail how the funds requested would be spent. Although there is no specific dollar limit on proposals, we anticipate funding will not exceed $1000 per proposal/project.
Please note: The events/projects associated with approved RFPs must occur in the same fiscal year in which the RFPs are submitted and funds must be expended by the end of that fiscal year. Also, all events/projects must take place AFTER the committee meeting date in which they are approved.
In evaluating the merits of each proposal, the IEC will consider the following criteria:

RE: International Research Seed Money, Call for Proposals
DATE: September 28, 2010
In addition to the modest amount of resources allocated by the Dean to the School of Education Global Education Committee (GEC) to encourage the development of projects, courses, and programs, during 2010-2011, the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER) will make available $10,000 for seed money to promote working on grants to be submitted through WCER for externally funded research on international education topics.
The goal is to stimulate externally funded research on international education outside the US. This research could be comparative or it could concern a single country. To use these funds researchers will need to identify a specific funding source for which these funds would help them apply. The funds will be available to persons eligible to serve as principal investigators at WCER, i.e. faculty and PhD-level academic staff at UW-Madison.
The committee will review applications at each meeting until the funds are expended.
The proposals should be brief, no more than 3 pages, and should include a description of the nature of the project, a listing of how the funds requested would be spent and the specific funding source(s) to be approached. Applications for external funding must be submitted in the same fiscal year as the event/project funded by the seed money. All events/projects must take place AFTER the committee meeting date in which they are approved.
In considering the merits of each proposal, the GEC criterion is the potential for the project to get external funding. You must agree to submit a proposal to an external funding source through WCER to continue the work related to the seed-funded research.
