BREAKING NEWS: SCHOOL OF EDUCATION RECEIVES $31 MILLION GIFT
[5/19/04] You’re among the first to know . . . this afternoon Charles Read, dean of the School of Education, and Peter Spear, UW-Madison provost, announced a $31 million gift that will allow the University to renovate, modernize, and complete the historic Education Building on Bascom Hill. The donors are UW-Madison alumni John P. and Tashia F. Morgridge. John is a graduate of the School of Business, and Tashia is a graduate of the School of Education and an emerita member of its Board of Visitors. For the complete story, see:

ART PROFESSOR NAMED ASSOCIATE VICE CHANCELLOR
Laurie Beth Clark, professor of art and director of the visual culture cluster, will become the new associate vice chancellor for faculty and staff programs, effective July 1. Clark has held positions as chair of the Department of Art, interim associate dean of the School of Education, and Emily Mead Baldwin Bell Bascom Professor of Creative Arts. In her new position, she will oversee three general areas: faculty and staff support initiatives, hiring and retention initiatives, and leadership and professional development. SCHOOL’S ALUMNI WEEKEND ADDRESS IS ON THE WEB
Even if you didn’t make it to campus for Alumni Weekend May 8, you can still enjoy the School of Education’s keynote presentation by Curtis J. Bonk, an Alumni Achievement Award recipient. Bonk, a professor of educational psychology and instructional systems technology at Indiana University, spoke on the technological changes that are beginning to alter the course of teaching and learning. SCHOOL AWARDS $300,000 IN UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
The School of Education recognized 179 of its best and brightest students at its annual Undergraduate Honors Banquet May 4. Thanks to our generous alumni and friends, scholarships totaling more than $300,000 – a record amount – were awarded at the event.

SITE PROVIDES RESOURCES ON ATHLETIC TRAINING
Links to a musculoskeletal atlas and to professional journals such as “Athletic Therapy Today” are just a few of the resources offered by the newly designed web site of the Athletic Training Education Program. Athletic training is a certificate/specialization program within the School’s Department of Kinesiology. Select the “Resources” link on the web site at:

RESEARCH: ALIGNING INSTRUCTION AND STANDARDS
A new set of survey tools is helping K-12 educators review the degree of alignment between local instruction and state standards and assessments. John Smithson and colleagues at the School’s Wisconsin Center for Education Research helped to develop the Surveys of Enacted Curriculum, which are now available for English language arts and reading, mathematics, and science. POLISH YOUR COMPUTER SKILLS ONLINE THIS SUMMER
Seems like there's never time for this during the academic year, but if you would like to hone your computer skills this summer, the School's Center on Instructional Materials and Computing (CIMC) has compiled a list of web-based tutorials on computer software. The list provides links to tutorials on Adobe's Photoshop and Premiere, Apple's iMovie, Macromedia's Dreamweaver and Fireworks, Microsoft's Office, and many more. To view this resource, visit:

DISTANCE TEACHING AND LEARNING CONFERENCE IS AUG. 4-6
This year’s 20th annual Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning will be held August 4-6 at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison. Considered the premier conference of its kind, the event offers more than 150 sessions, three keynote presentations, 24 course-design showcases, and much more. The conference is organized by the School’s Graduate Program in Continuing and Vocational Education. CEW OFFERS SUMMER INSTITUTES ON CAREER DEVELOPMENT

The School of Education’s annual Homecoming Tailgate is scheduled for Saturday, October 23, 2004, when the Badgers will face Northwestern. Our Alumni Office will mail out information in mid-July. Recordings by UW-Madison School of Music faculty now can be purchased via an online CD store. Offerings include recordings by the Pro Arte String Quartet, Wisconsin Brass Quintet, the UW-Madison Jazz Big Band, and others. Revenues fund scholarships in the School of Music.
