PHOTO GALLERY OF COMMENCEMENT CELEBRATION
A good time was had by all at the School of Education’s
commencement breakfast December 19, as family and friends
joined Dean Read and education faculty in celebrating the
achievements of the School’s December graduates. More
than 200 people attended the event, which preceded graduation
ceremonies at the Kohl Center.

SCULPTURE AND PRINTMAKING
PROGRAMS DEBUT WEBSITES
The Department of Art continues to enhance its web presence,
recently introducing redesigned sites for both its sculpture
and printmaking programs. The sites feature student and faculty
artwork, program offerings, information on visiting artists,
and much more. You can access each from the Art Department’s
home page via the “General Resources” list in
the right-hand column.

EPS NEWSLETTER GOES ELECTRONIC
Now available online, the latest issue of the Educational
Policy Studies newsletter looks at the department’s
activities in international education. It features an interview
with Professor Ki Seok Kim, an EPS alumnus and School of Education
Alumni Achievement Award recipient. Of course, the issue is
also filled with lots of news about faculty and alumni.

RESEARCH: SCALING UP INNOVATIVE
PRACTICES IN MATH AND SCIENCE
For eight years, Professor Tom Carpenter and his colleagues
at the School’s Wisconsin Center for Education Research
(WCER) have worked with teachers to create and study classrooms
in which compelling new visions of math and science are becoming
the norm. A WCER article on their research delineates what
teachers need to know to help students learn math and science
with understanding, and how professional development can be
designed to foster teaching for understanding.

RESEARCH: CHARTER HIGH SCHOOLS
AND REAL-WORLD PRACTICES
You’ll find a wealth of resources about charter high
schools on a website created by the School’s Center
on Education and Work (CEW). The resources were developed
as a result of a two-year CEW study which focused on charter-school
practices that link students to the world beyond the classroom.
Resources include reports, case studies, highlighted practices,
student voices, and much more.

2005 CAREERS CONFERENCE
- JAN. 31 - FEB. 2
“Developing Careers, Changing Lives ” is the theme
of this year’s careers conference, sponsored by the
School’s Center on Education and Work. The conference
– to be held at the Marriott Madison-West – features
more than 150 sessions on topics that include careers in the
classroom, data-driven accountability, future occupational
projections, school-to-career programs, business-education
partnerships, and much more. Pre-registration is required.

CONFERENCE ON THE FEDERAL
ROLE IN EDUCATION - FEB. 2-4
All presentations are free and open to the public during this
conference on “The No Child Left Behind Act and the
Federal Role in Education: Accountability and Equity in America’s
Public Schools.” Featured speakers include Elizabeth
Burmaster, Wisconsin’s superintendent of public instruction;
Kati Haycock, director of The Education Trust in Washington,
D.C.; and Melissa Roderick, co-director of the Consortium
on Chicago School Research at the University of Chicago. The
School’s Department of Educational Policy Studies is
partnering with the Department of Sociology and the La Follette
School of Public Affairs to sponsor the conference, to be
held at the Pyle Center in Madison.

DANCE PROGRAM HIGH SCHOOL
WORKSHOP - FEB. 26
This annual workshop gives high school students an opportunity
to take modern, ballet, and world-dance classes taught by
the program’s faculty, staff, and guest artists. During
the workshop, which will be held in Lathrop Hall, incoming
freshmen also may audition for a Dance Program scholarship
for the upcoming year. The daylong workshop is free, but advance
registration is required and can be completed online.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
CONFERENCE - MARCH 11-12
Early-registration deadline is February 28 for the 2005 Education
Across Six Continents conference, to be held at the Pyle Center
in Madison. “Teaching and Curriculum for a Global Society”
is the focus of this year’s event, which features a
variety of roundtables and workshops. Keynote speaker is Edward
Gnehm, former ambassador to Jordan, Australia, and Kuwait,
who will discuss the Middle East and American foreign policy.

OPPORTUNITIES
Among the many workshops for educators offered this semester
by the School’s Office of Education Outreach are Early
Literacy Instruction (Jan. 25), WKCE Mathematics and Reading
Assessment Frameworks (Feb. 17), and Enhancing the IEP Team
Process (Feb. 23). Details on these and many other professional-development
opportunities are available on the Outreach Office’s
website.
