NEW DEAN SHARES HER THOUGHTS VIA PODCAST
Here’s your chance to meet Dean Julie Underwood, who officially began her new role on August 8, 2005. She was the featured guest August 28 on "For the Record," a half-hour public affairs program on WISC-TV Channel 3 in Madison, hosted by editorial director Neil Heinen. Topics included the federal role in education (e.g., No Child Left Behind), bullying, gender identity, culture wars, school finance, and the School of Education's role in preparing educators and serving as a resource for Wisconsin's K-12 schools. The audio portion of the program is available as a podcast download on the Channel 3000 website (scroll to bottom of page).

HIGHLIGHTS OF DISTANCE EDUCATION CONFERENCE NOW ONLINE
Even if you weren’t one of the more than 1,000 people attending the Aug. 3-5 Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning, you can still enjoy conference highlights via its “Shared Space” website, which offers video and audio broadcasts of keynote presentations, PowerPoint files of conference forums, and much more.

RESEARCH: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AS ENGINE OF CHANGE
“Professional development is the most powerful engine of change if you’re trying to change what goes on in schools,” says Adam Gamoran, professor of sociology and director of the School’s Wisconsin Center for Education Research. Gamoran’s comments appear in a newsletter published by the Comprehensive Center-Region VI, which is housed in the School of Education. This issue, which examines “Professional Development From the Inside Out: District and School-Level Strategies,” is available as a PDF file.

CONTINUING EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND
The School’s Office of Educational Outreach offers a variety of enrichment opportunities for educators and others this fall, including workshops that will explore “Online Virtual Museums” (Sept 26- Oct. 31) and “Best Practices in Reading Instruction: Grades 2-5" (Oct. 21), as well as the 2nd Annual Conference on Arts-Curriculum-Community (Nov. 12-13). Details on these and other continuing education opportunities can be found on the Outreach website.

WISCAPE FOSTERS DIALOGUE ON ISSUES IN HIGHER EDUCATION
The Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education (WISCAPE) began its busy fall semester on September 13 with a free public forum on “The Future of the Public University.” Future discussions will examine campus climate, diversity at UW-Madison, and higher education and future state budgets, among other issues. Not to worry if you can’t attend a forum, as the center archives presentations in various formats on its website. Details on WISCAPE’s upcoming events and archived materials can be found on the center’s website.

CIMC PROVIDES RESOURCES FOR HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH (SEPTEMBER)
The “webliographies” developed by the School’s Center for Instructional Materials and Computing (CIMC) provide links to a variety of web resources for educators, parents, and others. Its “Hispanic Heritage Month” webliography will connect you with information on Hispanic/Latino heritage, history, and culture.

CHILDREN’S BOOK AUTHOR TO SPEAK - OCT. 5
Angela Johnson, recipient of the 2004 Michael Printz and Coretta Scott King awards for her novel, The First Part Last, will deliver the Charlotte Zolotow Lecture on Oct. 5, at 7:30 pm in the Wisconsin Union Theatre. This is a free public lecture sponsored by the School’s Cooperative Children’s Book Center.

GLASS LAB ENHANCES WEBSITE, PREPARES FOR OCT. 7-8 OPEN HOUSE
Check the “Alumni” link on the Glass Lab’s website for a look at the work of the Glass Program’s distinguished alumni (Dale Chihuly, Audrey Handler, and others). If you’re close to campus, you’ll also want to mark your calendar for Oct. 7-8, when the Glass Lab will hold its annual fall open house in its recently renovated facility, located at the south end of Frances Street, across from the Kohl Center. The open house will feature demonstrations of glass blowing, and neon and flame working, as well as an art sale. Hours are 10 am to 7 pm on Friday, Oct. 7, and 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, Oct. 8.

VISITING ARTISTS & STUDENT PERFORMANCES HIGHLIGHT DANCE CALENDAR
Jennifer Brightbill, NYC dance costume designer, and Karen Brown-Larimore, former UW Theatre make-up and costume designer, are among those featured in the Dance Program’s Friday Forum series in September. Also of note is the annual Fall Student Concert, Oct. 20-22.

CAMPUS: NEW WEBSITE LAUNCHED FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
Prospective students now can easily find information they need about UW-Madison, thanks to a redesigned UW Admissions Office website. It provides easy access to what research shows are the top activities students want to complete at such a site: request information, schedule a visit, apply online, and check application status.

WEB GEM: BACK-TO-SCHOOL FACTS GALORE
For you numbers afficionados, the U.S. Census Bureau’s Back-to-School “Facts for Features” website provides an incredible variety of school-related statistics, such as the number of people enrolled in PK-16 schools nationwide (74.9 million), the amount of money spent in family clothing stores in August 2004 ($6.0 billion), and the average number of children participating each month in the national school lunch program (29 million). You can find these facts and many more on the census website.
