EDUCATION BUILDING AND ART FACILITIES SET FOR MAJOR CHANGES
There’s much ado about buildings these days in the School of Education, with plans well underway to renovate and expand the historic Education Building on Bascom Hill. In addition, the School has made tangible progress on the long-sought goal of consolidating Art, one of its largest departments, at a single location. “Building Momentum,” the feature article in the fall issue of Campus Connections, the School’s print newsletter, provides a detailed progress report on these exciting projects.

RESEARCH CONSIDERS HOW SCHOOL LEADERS BUILD PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITIES
In a recently posted research paper, Richard Halverson looks at several studies on distributed leadership in urban, suburban and rural school districts and describes structures leaders have used to engage in schoolwide reform. His paper (available as a PDF file) concludes with design principles to guide others in building professional communities in their schools. Halverson conducts research at the School’s Wisconsin Center for Education Research and is an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.

CCBC CHOICES GOES DIGITAL WITH PAST EDITIONS
Good news for Choices fans! Past issues of CCBC Choices, the annual review of books for children and young adults compiled by librarians at the School’s Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC), are now available online via the Wisconsin Digital Collections Center. The digital collection - consisting of PDF documents - covers the first edition of Choices, which came out in 1980, through Choices 2005. Every spring, when the new print edition is released, the previous year’s edition will be added to the digital collection. (To access the PDF files, select the “Cooperative Children’s Book Center” from the Communities in DSpace list.)

DANCE PROGRAM CELEBRATES 80TH ANNIVERSARY
Eighty years after the first dance major curriculum was created by Margaret H’Doubler on this campus, iterations of H’Doubler’s vision continue to flourish. To celebrate its anniversary, the Dance Program will hold public forums and concerts throughout the academic year, beginning with a Celebration of World Dance at the Union Theater on September 30 at 8:00 p.m. Guest artists, including Alberto “Tito” del Saz, will also be featured during the year. WEBGEM: MADISON MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART OFFERS TEACHER RESOURCES
Kudos to the new Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA), which opened just this past spring, and already has created a rich website of resources for teachers. While some of the resources can be found only at the museum, others are available to educators outside the Madison area. These include MMoCA Collects, an internet-based introduction to the museum’s collection with images and lesson plans that may be downloaded for classroom use at no charge; and the SchoolsMuseumsART (SMART) Project, which consists of posters, slides, and a 180-page teaching text that may be purchased by schools for $260.
