Do you have fond memories of a favorite professor, a remarkable class, or an unusual experience while you were in the School of Education? If so, please share them with the External Relations Office for a School of Education Memories Booklet (both print and electronic) to be published in May 2008. FIRST CALL FOR EDUCATION ALUMNI AWARD NOMINATIONS
If you know an alumna/alumnus who has had an outstanding career or whose work within a profession or a community exemplifies the service for which the School of Education is known, consider nominating that person for an alumni award. The Alumni Achievement Award and the Outstanding Recent Graduate Award are the highest honors given to alumni by the School of Education. Nominations are due Jan. 15, and require letters of support. A nomination form and guidelines are available online.

PHOTO GALLERY SHOWCASES ALUMS AT HOMECOMING TAILGATE
Nearly 400 education alumni and their families and friends ate breakfast and brats, sang “On Wisconsin,” and celebrated UW football during the School’s homecoming tailgate at Union South on Oct. 27. (Wisconsin: 33, Indiana: 3 - Hooray!) The tailgate featured a five- and ten-year reunion of alums from the classes of 1997 and 2002. An online photo gallery captures the highlights.

SCHOOL CELEBRATES AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK, NOV. 12-17
A presentation on standards-based reform and the poverty gap, a lecture by children’s book author Beverley Naidoo, and the annual Partners in Education Banquet are but a few of the activities planned for the School’s celebration of American Education Week. The national observance, now in its 86th year, pays tribute to K-12 schools and to all the people who help children and young adults achieve.

POLICY BRIEF EXAMINES LINK BETWEEN EDUCATION RESOURCES AND STUDENT PERFORMANCE
A policy brief published by the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER) discusses how finance research has begun to link the level and use of education resources with strategies that districts and schools can use to double student performance over a five- to ten-year period. Professor Allan Odden and colleagues at WCER’s Consortium for Policy Research in Education conducted the research and wrote the brief, available as a PDF file.

SCALE PRESENTS ‘KEY CONCEPT’ ARTICLES ON MATH AND SCIENCE EDUCATION
A new series of articles summarizes the research and findings of the SCALE (System-wide Change for All Learners and Educators) project, which aims to improve K-12 math and science education. Articles address topics such as teacher quality, evidence-based design and outcomes, diversity, lifelong learning skills, and institutional change and sustainability.

ART LOFTS FACILITY HEADS TOWARD CONSTRUCTION PHASE
Construction soon will begin on the next phase of an effort to consolidate all Art Department programs at a single site. Once completed, the Art Lofts – located in a remodeled warehouse next to the Kohl Center – will house all Art Department facilities except those now located on the sixth and seventh floors of the Humanities Building.

TANDEM PRESS LAUNCHES E-NEWS
Tandem Press, a fine-art printmaking studio affiliated with the Department of Art, has launched a monthly online newsletter with information on visiting artists, Tandem events, new print releases, and more. Art fans will find the inaugural October edition online and may register to receive the news via Tandem’s homepage.

JANUARY CAREERS CONFERENCE OFFERS EARLY REGISTRATION DISCOUNTS
Registering before Dec. 15 guarantees discount rates for this premier national conference on career development and education for work. The event will be held Jan. 28-30 at the Madison Concourse Hotel. Hosted by the School’s Center on Education and Work, the conference offers more than 150 practitioner sessions, off-site tours to workplaces, hands-on technology sessions, outstanding keynote speakers, and much more.

NOVEMBER EVENTS FEATURE FILMS, FORUMS, PERFORMANCES AND MORE
School-sponsored events in November include Cinefest: a multicultural film and performance festival (Nov. 8-11); an Educational Policy Studies panel discussion on international education (Nov. 14); the Fall Faculty Dance Concert (Nov. 15-17); and WISCAPE forums on issues in higher education (throughout November), to name but a few.

WEBGEM:JAMESTOWN ONLINE ADVENTURE
In this interactive game, children and young adults play the role of the Captain of Jamestown Colony and make decisions regarding the food supply, health, finances, and morale of the colonists. Players are guided by a copy of the London Company’s Instructions, and can ask fellow colonists and Native Americans for advice. The website warns, however, that some advice is better than others!

KUDOS TO SOE FACULTY AND STAFF
• Colleen Capper, professor in the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis, will be presented with a Master Professor Award from the University Council for Education Administration during its November convention.
• Hardin Coleman, professor of Counseling Psychology and associate dean of the School of Education, was selected as the recipient of the Kenneth and Mamie Clark Award from the American Psychology Association.
• Jacqueline DeWalt, director of the PEOPLE program, was inducted into WAA's Badgers Then and Now Hall of Fame.
• Professor William Hoyt received a three-year appointment as an associate editor of the Journal of Counseling Psychology.
• Li Li Ji, professor and chair of the Department of Kinesiology, was elected to active membership in the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
• Anna Lewis, assistant director of the CIMC, received the 2007 Academic Staff Service Award for campus libraries.
• David Rosenthal, associate professor in Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education, was elected chair of the Certification of Disability Management Specialists Commission.
• Andrew Winterstein, director of the Athletic Training Education Program in the Department of Kinesiology, shared a 2007 MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) Award with colleagues from California State University at Chico.
