UW-MADISON IS TOPS IN EDUCATION RESEARCH SPENDING
UW-Madison spent $30 million of externally generated funds on education research in fiscal 2006, more than any other U.S. university, according to the latest figures released by the National Science Foundation.  And most of that research resides in the School of Education’s Wisconsin Center for Education Research, one of the nation’s oldest and largest university-based research centers.

THREE SERVICEMEN FIND INSPIRATION AS ARTISTS
“I was good in math, science and history, but didn’t have a passion for it,” says Marine Sgt. Kevin Canning, a UW-Madison senior pursuing a degree in art.  Canning and two other active-duty servicemen describe their experiences as art majors in the upcoming winter edition of Campus Connections, the School’s print newsletter.

JOURNAL FOR VOCATIONAL SPECIAL NEEDS EDUCATION GOES DIGITAL
The fall issue of Vocational Special Needs Education is now available online for open-access viewing and downloading.  Among its featured articles are “Adolescent Pregnancy in America,” excerpts from “Status and Trends in the Education of Racial and Ethnic Minorities,” and excerpts from “Perceptions and Expectations of Youth with Disabilities.”  The journal has been co-edited since 1997 by researcher John Gugerty in the School’s Center on Education and Work.

NEGATIVE VIEWS OF GRIEF COUNSELING NOT SUBSTANTIATED BY RESEARCH
The belief that conventional grief interventions are potentially harmful has become common wisdom among bereavement researchers ever since a report published in 2000 claimed that 50 percent of “normal” grievers deteriorate as a result of grief counseling.  However, a new study by counseling psychology professors William Hoyt (UW-Madison School of Education) and Dale Larson (Santa Clara University) reveals flaws in the statistical analysis of the original report.  Moreover, in an extensive review of scientific literature on the topic, the new study finds that grief counseling actually shows positive effects.

ALUMNI AWARD NOMINATIONS ARE DUE JAN. 15
There’s still time to nominate stellar alumni for School of Education alumni awards.  If you know someone who has had an outstanding career or whose work within a community exemplifies the service for which the School is known, consider nominating that person for an Alumni Achievement Award or for an Outstanding Recent Graduate Award, the highest honors bestowed upon alumni by the School.  A nomination form and guidelines are available online.

ART DEPARTMENT FACULTY EXHIBITION : JAN. 26 to MAR. 30
This major exhibition at the Chazen Museum of Art fills three galleries as well as the entire fourth floor of the museum, and showcases the work of 27 Art Department faculty, 17 emeritus faculty, and seven affiliates.  Highlights include gallery talks given throughout the run of the exhibition by faculty members, including Michael Jay McClure (contemporary art & theory), Tom Jones (photography), Paul Sacaridiz (ceramics) and many others.  The public is invited to a free opening reception at the Chazen on Friday, Jan. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m.  In addition, the School is honoring Art faculty, other exhibitors, and department friends at a private reception prior to the opening.

EPS CONFERENCE ON FAITH IN SCHOOLS: FEB. 7 & 8
Stimulating discussions are sure to take place when the intersections of religion and education are explored in “Faith in Schools: Religion and Education in Comparative and International Perspectives.”  Conference highlights include a keynote presentation by John Bowen, Dunbar-Van Cleve Professor in Arts and Sciences and director of the Initiative in Pluralism, Politics, and Religion at Washington University in St. Louis. The event is sponsored by the Department of Educational Policy Studies (EPS), WISCAPE, and other campus units.  All sessions are free and open to the public, with registration on site at the Pyle Center.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION CONFERENCE: MAR. 31 & APR. 1
Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea, will provide the keynote talk at the 2008 Wisconsin Council for the Social Studies and International Education Conference.  Following the theme “Planning for Our World: Our Dreams and Our Actions,” the conference promises thought-provoking sessions and a full afternoon of workshops that focus on social studies and global education in the sciences, arts, and humanities.  The event will be held at the Madison Marriott West Hotel, and is sponsored by the Wisconsin Council for the Social Studies, the School’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, the School’s International Education Committee, and other campus units.  Fees are reduced for early registration – due March 1.

KUDOS TO SOE FACULTY AND STAFF

  • Professor Laurie Beth Clark, Department of Art, has received the Arts Institute Creative Arts Award for her International Comparative Study of Trauma Memorials.
  • Professor Truman Lowe, lecturer Fred Stonehouse, and Professor Emeritus Alfred Sessler, all of the Art Department, have received Wisconsin Visual Art Lifetime Achievement Awards, given by the Museum of Wisconsin Art, the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, and Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors.
  • Paul D. Toth, assistant professor of Spanish education, has become the first person to receive the Paul Pimsleur Award for Research in Foreign Language Education twice for a single-authored paper.  The award is given by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and the Modern Language Journal.
