SCHOOL’S GRADUATE PROGRAMS RANKED AMONG THE BEST
The School’s core programs again this year rank among the best in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2009 edition of America’s Best Graduate Schools. Ranked No. 1 are programs in Curriculum & Instruction and in Educational Psychology. Four programs were ranked No. 2 in the nation: Administration/Supervision, Counseling/Personnel Services, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education. Education Policy was ranked No. 3 and Special Education was ranked No. 9.

DEAN UNDERWOOD RECEIVES OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR AWARD
Kudos to Dean Julie Underwood, who has received the 2008 Outstanding Educator Award from the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators (WASDA). Underwood will be presented with the award – one of only three given yearly by the organization – at the 2008 WASDA Annual Educational Conference on April 23 in Elkhart Lake.

EDUCATION BUILDING PLANS FINALIZED; ART LOFTS WORK UNDERWAY
With work on one building project well underway and construction set to begin early next year on another, the School of Education faces some exciting changes on the horizon.

SCHOOL HONORS OUTSTANDING FACULTY & STAFF

Seven members of the School of Education will be recognized at a reception on April 22 with Distinguished Achievement Awards, the highest honor the School bestows upon current faculty and staff. Receiving faculty honors are Leonard Abbeduto and Thomas Popkewitz. Receiving academic staff honors are Nancy Blake and Claude Heintz. Receiving classified staff honors are Susan LaLuzerne and Donna Meicher. The Claire Shaffer Classified Staff Award will be presented to Mary Fish.

ART ALUMS INVITED TO JOIN ONLINE DIRECTORY

Calling all art alums! If you haven’t already signed up for the department’s online alumni directory, now’s the time to act. The directory is a great networking tool that features photos of alums, descriptions of their work, links to their websites, and more.

TANDEM PRESS TO PARTICIPATE IN ART CHICAGO 2008

Tandem Press has been selected to participate in Art Chicago 2008, one of the world’s premier contemporary and modern art fairs, which will run April 25-28 at the Merchandise Mart. The fair showcases 180 galleries and features the works of approximately 2,000 artists from around the world.

LANGUAGE STANDARDS AND RESOURCE GUIDE NOW AVAILABLE

Print copies of the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards and Resource Guide, 2007 Edition, are now available. The guide is published by the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment Consortium (WIDA), which is housed at the School’s Wisconsin Center for Education Research. Contents of the guide may be previewed on the WIDA website.

SUZY FAVOR HAMILTON PARTNERS WITH SCHOOL ON SUMMER PROGRAM FOR KIDS

Students going into grades 6-9 can register now for Movin’ Minds!, a new pre-college program that will feature Olympian runner, Suzy Favor Hamilton. Hamilton is partnering with the Office of Education Outreach on the program (July 21-25), which promotes healthy bodies and healthy minds. It’s also time to register for “Technology and Arts,” a popular summer program for students entering grades 6-9 that will run June 16-20. Registration for both programs may be done online.

WISCONSIN IDEA LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: JULY 7-10

Developing strategies to double student performance and close the achievement gap is the aim of this four-day academy. It features in-depth presentations by successful schools from around the country, presentations by ELPA professors on their research, and a closing keynote address by Kati Haycock, founder and president of the Education Trust. The conference is being organized by the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (ELPA). Online registration is available.

SPOKEN WORD AND HIP-HOP EDUCATION INSTITUTE: JULY 7-11

Teachers, students, and youth workers are invited to register now for this award-winning seminar on spoken word pedagogy, hip-hop culture, and educational enrichment. The institute opens with a special performance by poet, activist, and founder of the Black Arts movement, Amiri Baraka. Check the website for registration information.

WEBGEM: SMITHSONIAN AMERICAN ART MUSEUM

A special thanks to Ed School alumna, Susan Nichols, for pointing us to this website. Its section for Teachers and Students (and parents as well) contains lots of classroom resources and interactive activities. The museum also offers real-time video-conference programs, K-16, with an emphasis on art, social studies, and language arts. Nichols is the Lunder Education Chair of the museum.
