Art Lofts Opening Celebration Draws Hundreds

It was a week to remember . . . Hundreds of students, faculty, staff, alumni, guests and members of the public attended the Art Department and School of Education's celebration of the opening of the Art Lofts facility during the week of May 5-9, 2009.  Highlights included a ribbon-cutting ceremony; remarks by Interim Dean Adam Gamoran, Interim Provost Julie Underwood, Chancellor Biddy Martin, and  Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton; and reflections on the early days of UW glass and ceramics by the family of emeritus faculty member Harvey Littleton and by Dale Chihuly (via video). School Honors Faculty and Staff with 30 Years of Service

The stellar reputation of the School of Education is due, in large part, to the hard work of its dedicated faculty and staff.  Each year the School recognizes an elite group in its community – employees who have served the School, UW-Madison, and the state of Wisconsin for 30 years.  This year, 22 faculty and staff members were honored for their service at a special luncheon with Interim Dean Gamoran.

Banquet Recognizes Stellar Students and their Benefactors

More than 350 people gathered in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union on April 29 for the School of Education’s annual Undergraduate Honors Banquet, where 211 scholarships totaling nearly $400,000 were announced.  The banquet provides scholarship recipients and their families the opportunity to say “thank you” to the people who support their awards.

Outstanding Faculty and Staff Receive Honors

Every year the School of Education recognizes those colleagues who have contributed to the School in extraordinary ways.  Seven faculty and staff members were honored with 2009 Distinguished Achievement Awards at a special reception on April 22: Cheryl Hanley-Maxwell, Jin-Wen Yu, Lisa Armstrong, Martha Fisher, Joyce Hemphill, Catherine Loeb, and Ann Ward.  A photo gallery of the event is available on the School’s Alumni Events page.

School Honors Outstanding Alumni

The School of Education is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2009 Distinguished Alumni Awards.  Receiving Alumni Achievement Awards are David Dahlquist (art), Ralph Fessler (educational administration and supervision), and Linda Valli (educational policy studies).  Receiving the Outstanding Recent Graduate Award is Megan Johnson (pictured, secondary education-English).  And receiving the Honorary Alumni Achievement Award is Kevin Henkes (art). SMHC Blog Offers News for Business and Education

Headed by Allan Odden and James Kelly, the Strategic Management of Human Capital in Public Education project (SMHC) seeks the strategic redesign of human capital management systems for teachers and other leaders in the nation’s largest 100 public school districts. The SMHC web site includes a blog, and offers frequent updates on business community news, education community news, media, SMHC resources, and task force news.

Education Professor Assesses Learning in a Digital Age

In computer games, students can learn by solving problems that are realistic, complex, and meaningful. So games have great potential to teach the kind of thinking that young people need in the digital age, says educational psychology professor David Williamson Shaffer. But after years of designing and testing digital learning environments emphasizing learning in action, Shaffer has turned to the problem of assessment.  Shaffer’s research is housed in the Wisconsin Center for Education Research.

CEW Introduces Online Course on Retirement Planning

Planning for a satisfying retirement requires more than looking at finances or planning for future health needs.  With the increased longevity of baby boomers, it also requires exploration of the many options available for work and leisure during retirement years.  To help people consider those options, the Center on Education and Work (CEW) has developed an online independent-study course that’s available this summer (although participants may join at any time).

Dance Program Publishes Newsletter, Prepares for Upcoming Events

The Dance Program’s newsletter, Momentum, is now available online, with articles and photos galore about performances, last summer’s trip to New York City – “Badgers Dance the Big Apple” – and much more.  Looking ahead, the program is gearing up for the World Dance Alliance Assembly (May 28-31) and Dance Millennium – a week-long intensive experience in dance for students ages 14+ that begins June 14 (online pre-registration available).

VARC Offers Summer Institute on Value-Added Measures

Value-added models have emerged as the most promising strategy for leveraging student data to measure the performance of K-12 schools, teachers, programs and policies.  Robert H. Meyer, director of the School’s Value-Added Research Center (VARC), has been working on the development of value-added measures and their use for accountability and school improvement for nearly 20 years.  He and his colleagues offer this unique summer opportunity for school leaders, July 27-31.

Proposals Accepted Now for Careers Conference 2010

Proposals relating to career development and education at all levels are being accepted now for the 2010 Careers Conference.   The conference, one of the most comprehensive gatherings of its kind, will be held January 26-27 in Madison.  Deadline for proposal submission is August 28.

Kudos to Education Faculty and Staff

  • Kim Cridler (associate professor, art) has received a Vilas Faculty Research Award from the UW-Madison Arts Institute.
  • Carl Grant (professor, curriculum & instruction) has been named a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association.
  • Stephen Hilyard (associate professor, art) has received an Emily Mead Baldwin Award in the Creative Arts from the UW-Madison Arts Institute.
  • Thomas Kratochwill has been selected as a Fellow of the UW-Madison Teaching Academy.
  • Douglas Rosenberg (professor, art) has received an Emily Mead Baldwin Award in the Creative Arts from the UW-Madison Arts Institute.
  • Constance Steinkeuhler Squire (assistant professor, curriculum & instruction) has been awarded a NAEd Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship.
  • Jin-Wen Yu (professor, dance) has received the UW-Madison Arts Institute Creative Arts Award.
  • Kenneth Zeichner (associate dean) has been elected to the National Academy of Education.

Next Issue

The School of Education Online News will observe summer vacation June through August, resuming publication in September.  In the meantime, we leave you with our annual summer salute – here’s to sailboats on Lake Mendota, jazz on the Union Terrace, and two scoops of orange-custard chocolate-chip ice cream – hooray for summer!
