JUST RELEASED – CCBC CHOICES 2008
It’s not often you can get something this good for free! Choices 2008 features annotated entries on 279 books published in 2007 for children and young adults – all recommended by librarians at the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC). A limited number of copies are free to alumni upon request. To receive yours, simply reply to this message, using the e-mail link at the bottom of the screen, with your name and (snail) mailing address. KUDOS TO “FORWARD UNDER 40” AWARD RECIPIENTS
Congratulations to School of Education alumni who have received a Forward Under 40 Award, WAA’s new initiative to honor young Badgers who are living the Wisconsin Idea. Five education alumni are among the 23 recipients: Kaleem Caire and Lisa Peyton-Caire of Next Generation Education Foundation, a nonprofit committed to increasing school success by adolescent males of color; Ryan Christianson, a high school associate principal and co-creator of the tech-based learning tool Digital Time Travelers; Paula Kluth, author and independent consultant in the field of autism education; and Jose Lerma, internationally recognized artist and professor of art. In addition, Jason Noble, designer of the prize, is an education alumnus from the Department of Art.

PROFESSOR HELPS TEACHERS IMPROVE STUDENTS’ LEARNING OF SCIENCE CONCEPTS
Education professor Sadhana Puntambekar is working with science teachers to integrate digital text with hands-on activities using CoMPASS, a hypertext system. This integration model aims to help students improve their conceptual learning in science. A snapshot of CoMPASS’s use in a classroom is the focus of this month’s feature article on the WCER website.

RESOURCE GUIDES FOR PK-12 EDUCATORS ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE
The Center for Instructional Materials and Computing (CIMC) has made online research just a bit easier for PK-12 educators. Its Resource Guides website provides links to quality online materials for classroom use, as well as links to a wide array of professional resources, including education news, government agencies, education statistics, and grant information.

OUTREACH OFFICE PROVIDES QUICK LINKS TO INFO ON SUMMER EDUCATION COURSES
Information on summer courses offered by the School of Education is only a few clicks away, thanks to the Office of Education Outreach (OEO). Its Summer Learning Opportunities website is organized by department, with a description of course offerings in each area, as well as departmental contact information.

HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER PUTS PUBLICATIONS ONLINE
Not to worry if you can’t attend the higher education forums offered throughout the year by the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education (WISCAPE). Presentations from many of the programs, as well as papers stemming from the center’s research, are available online. Publications include “Hard Times in America’s Laboratory for Democracy: Wisconsin Legislative Politics 1966 and 2006,” “Determinants of State Appropriations for Higher Education from 1985 to 2005,” and “The Context of ‘Choice’ in College Pathways,” to name but a few.

ART PROFESSOR CURATES SKETCHBOOK EXHIBIT AT UW LIBRARY
Ever wonder how artists come up with an idea for a painting, drawing or sculpture? The WorkBooks exhibit at the UW-Madison Special Collections library may provide some clues by allowing viewers a peek into the artistic process behind several local and national artists’ work. The exhibit, curated by associate professor of art Derrick Buisch, includes sketchbooks and other journals, and runs through May 19.

NORTH-CENTRAL REGIONAL AMERICAN COLLEGE DANCE CONFERENCE: MAR. 13-16
More than 500 students and faculty from 33 colleges and universities in the Midwest, along with 30 students from Taiwan, will come together in March with one thing in mind - dancing! Participants at the North-Central Regional American College Dance Conference will engage in four days of performances, workshops, panels, and master classes. The conference also includes seven performances at the Wisconsin Union Theater that are free and open to the public.

2008 WCSS-INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION CONFERENCE: MAR. 31-APR. 1
“Planning for Our World: Our Dreams and Our Actions” is the theme of this year’s WCSS-International Education Conference. Highlights include 100 sessions that focus on teaching social studies and global education, as well as a keynote presentation by Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea. Sponsors include the Wisconsin Council for the Social Studies (WCSS), the School’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, the School’s International Education Committee, and other campus units. Conference location: Madison Marriott West Hotel. Registration may be completed online.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON VALUE-ADDED MODELING: APR. 22-24
Prominent researchers from a variety of disciplines will gather at this conference to discuss how value-added modeling can be used to identify effective policies and practices (school improvement) and how it can be used to identify effective teachers and schools (accountability). The conference is organized by the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER), with funding support from the Carnegie Corporation, Joyce Foundation, and Spencer Foundation. Conference location: Fluno Center in Madison. Registration may be completed online.
