The Basic Collection
The Basic Collection is made up of children's and young adult trade books older than 18 months which are recommended for school and public library collections. Unlike the Current Collection, book have been selected for inclusion in the Basic Collection; therefore, it is more typical of what you would see in a school or public library. It is used by university students and faculty engaged in research; by teachers who are looking for trade books on a special theme or topic; and by librarians who are compiling bibliographies or making retrospective purchases for a particular library.
The CCBC Basic Collection is organized by genre: picture books, fiction and nonfiction. Since January 1995, all books in the Basic Collection are part of the on-line catalog of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Electronic Library, MADCAT. To limit a Madcat search to CCBC holdings, click on the "set limits' button on the main search screen, scroll down to the "location" drop down menu, and highlight "Cooperative Children's Book Center."
While we cannot compile special topics bibliographies on demand, the CCBC staff is always happy to help people find the books that they may want to look at to compile their own bibliography. As a web site feature, however, we will post a bibliography on a high-interest topic every two months. These book lists will be of special interest to teachers who are using trade books in the classroom, as well as to Education students and faculty. The current list is "The Natural World in Books for Children and Young Adults" compiled by CCBC librarians Kathleen T. Horning and Ginny Moore Kruse.
Each book in the Basic Collection includes a list of any awards or distinctions it has won. Any time a book appears on a recommended list, such as Horn Book Fanfare or Outstanding Social Studies Trade Books, we make a note of it inside the book itself. These notations are written just inside the book's cover, on the right endpaper.
Due to the CCBC's strong interest in multicultural literature, the Basic Collection has much to offer researchers in this field. Many people call us from across the nation for the annual statistics we keep of books by Black Authors and Illustrators.
