The Current Collection

The Current Collection includes review copies of nearly all trade books published in the United States for children and young adults in the past 18 months. In 1996 there were about 4,500 new titles published in this area.

The CCBC Current Collection is organized by genre: picture books, fiction and nonfiction. All books in the Current Collection are part of the on-line catalog of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Electronic Library, MADCAT. To limit a Madcat search to CCBC holdings, click on the "set limits' button on the main search screen, scroll down to the "location" drop down menu, and highlight "Cooperative Children's Book Center."

Unlike most library collections, these books have not been evaluated and selected by professional librarians. The Current Collection is simply a record of what has been published for children and young adults in the past 18 months. This collection is heavily used by school and public librarians throughout the state of Wisconsin, who come to the CCBC to evaluate first-hand those books they are thinking of purchasing.

Because the CCBC Current Collection affords us with the rare opportunity to see pretty much everything that's published, we are able to keep track of certain trends in publishing for children, as well as certain types of publishing. Throughout the year we keep a running list of books by and about African Americans, Latinos, American Indians and Asian Americans. Like the Current Collection itself, the books on these lists are not necessarily recommended; they are merely a record of titles that have been published so far this year. We also keep a record of books translated from foreign languages and published in the United States.

The CCBC staff spends a great deal of time reading, discussing and evaluating these newly published books. We hold monthly book discussions that are open to anyone who wishes to read the books in advance and join in. Here on our web site, you can read a review of the Book of the Week.

At the end of every year CCBC librarians prepare an annotated listing of the books we consider to be the best books of the year, called CCBC Choices. This booklet is published by the Friends of the CCBC and is sent out for free to all members of the Friends. Each year's edition of CCBC Choices opens with an essay that summarizes our observations about the year in children's publishing, including statistics related to multicultural literature.
