The Historical Collection

The Historical Collection includes fiction, nonfiction, picture books, magazines and annuals, and examples of chapbooks and toy books. Works date from the 18th to the 20th century, showing what children in the United States were reading in previous generations.

Special features of the collection are:

  • Representative Fiction, Nonfiction and Picture Books published for children in the United States and recommended in Children's Catalog beginning in 1909.
  • Newbery and Caldecott Medal Winners: First editions and significant later printings of the award winners from 1922 to present. Take a virtual trip back in time by finding out about the publishing history of The Story of Mankind, winner of the first Newbery Medal.
  • The Westing Game Manuscript: Ellen Raskin's notes and doodles, early and final drafts, design specifications, original jacket art, and correspondence with editor Ann Durrell show the evolution of this Newbery-winning book from start to finish.
  • Randolph Caldecott Collection: 18 titles, most of which were engraved and printed by Edmund Evans.
  • Popular Series Fiction: representative works from 19th and early 20th century boys' and girls' series.
  • Toy Books: some original 19th century editions from Ernest Nister and Lothar Meggendorfer, in addition to late 20th century reproductions of their works from the toy book renaissance of the 1980s, and many other original toy books, classified by mechanical devices used.
