Presentations
The Life Cycle of a Book. One of the most exciting parts of my work as an author and illustrator is meeting students and educators and sharing my books with them. That's why I love visiting schools! My presentation covers the entire life cycle of a book, from the moment I get the idea to the day (months later) when a box of completed books lands on my doorstep. I explain how I alter the landscape around my old farmhouse to create a habitat for the animal I'm studying, and how observing the animal along with research at the library provides me with the information I need to make a book. I use lots of visual aids including sketches, dummy books, printed sheets, and actual illustrations from my books. I show slides of my garden and studio and then end with a drawing game. I begin to draw an animal and the students try to figure out what it is. I color the picture demonstrating my colored-pencil technique and then donate the picture to your school or library. . Target audience: I am a presenter at lots of schools and Young Author's Conferences every year, with ages from preschool to adult. But, if I had to pick I think K-6th grade works best.

Fees
Each presentation lasts about 45 minutes with an additonal 10-15 minutes for question and answer. A full day visit has 3 presentations at a cost of $800 plus lodging (if needed) and .37 cents per mile of travel. I love to visit libraries, also. Please contact me about pricing and availability.
