Presentations
What Makes a Poem a Poem? In this poetry overview, students see and hear examples of wonderful poems that illustrate the most important aspects of poetry. The program lasts from 30 to 45 minutes and includes time for questions. Group participation makes it engaging and fun. . Target audience: larger and younger groups, kindergarten and up.

Write a Poem Step By Step. This five-step poetry writing workshop lasts from 75 to 90 minutes and includes time for writing and questions. Students see and hear examples of wonderful poems that illustrate each step of the writing process. Each student chooses a topic and writes a draft of a new poem. I received the Barbara Juster Esbensen 2000 Poetry Teaching Award for developing this program and using it with a third grade class. Target audience: smaller groups, grade three and up.

Additional topics for experienced writers . Programs can be targeted to fit a theme or focus on a specific type of poetry. Please see my Web site at www.joannmacken.com for more details. Target audience: experienced writers, grade three and up.

Fees
$850 per day plus travel and accommodation expenses if necessary (maximum of three presentations per day)

I am the author of more than one hundred books for children and a graduate of the M.F.A. in Writing for Children and Young Adults program at Vermont College.
