The Charlotte Zolotow Lecture and Award Presentation 1998

The first annual Charlotte Zolotow Lecture took place October 1, 1998, in the Wisconsin Union Theater, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin. Dean W. Charles Read of the School of Education opened the event by welcoming all who attended. Karla Kuskin delivered a superb lecture, entitled The Ins and Outs of Words. Prior to her speech, the first Charlotte Zolotow Award was given to Vera B. Williams for Lucky Song (Greenwillow) and an Honor was awarded Keiko Kasza for Don't Laugh, Joe! (Putnam).

Charlotte Zolotow attended the event with her daughter, Crescent Dragonwagon. Representatives from HarperCollins Publishers, co-sponsor of the event, included Susan Katz, William Morris and Robert O. Warren. Greenwillow Art Director Ava Weiss attended the event on behalf of William Morrow Company. A highpoint for all in attendance occurred when Charlotte Zolotow herself was awarded an honorary Charlotte Zolotow Medal and received a standing ovation.
