Gregory Maguire
Gregory Maguire will deliver the 12th annual Charlotte Zolotow Lecture on Wednesday, October 7, 2009,
at the Wisconsin Union Theater,
University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Gregory Maguire has written nineteen novels for children and seven novels for adults, including Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which was adapted for the stage and became a hit Broadway musical. In addition to Wicked, his adult novels include Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister (1999), Lost (2001), Mirror Mirror (2003), Son of a Witch (2005), and A Lion Among Men (2008), all published by HarperCollins. Maguire has a master’s degree in Children’s Literature from Simmons College, where he taught for several years, and he earned a doctorate in English and American literature from Tufts University in 1990. He is a founding board member and a co-director of Children’s Literature New England, where he is known for his eloquent, intelligent, and witty lectures about children’s books. His 2003 illustrated lecture on Maurice Sendak will be issued in September 2009 as Making Mischief: An Appreciation of Maurice Sendak (HarperCollins). Maguire is a frequent contributor of reviews, short stories, and essays; a short story he wrote and performed on NPR’s All Things Considered last December is forthcoming as a gift book in November 2009, and it will feature his original line drawings, marking his first foray into the field as an illustrator.
