Other Online Directories and Listings of Children's Book Creators
If you are interested in contacting a specific author or illustrator about a school or library visit, start by searching for an official web site that has contact information. If the person does not have a web site, contact her/him individual through the publisher of one of their recent books.
If you are interested in browsing other listings of book creators, here are some options:
In Wisconsin:
SCBWI-Wisconsin Speakers Directory: the Wisconsin chapter of the Society of Childen's Book Writers and Illustrators' Speakers Directory lists biographical information, and programming and contact information for SCBWI-WI members available to speak.
InfoSoup: a listing of Wisconsin authors (for children and adults) compiled by the Appleton Public Library
Milwaukee Public Library: a list of Wisconsin authors/illustrators for children in their collection
Wisconsin Authors Database: This project of the Wisconsin Center for the Book is a historical listing of Wisconsin authors derived from Wisconsin Authors and Their Books, 1836-1975 by Orrilla T. Blackshear. Additional listings through 2002 were compiled by the Wisconsin Center for the Book. The listing for each individual includes the place(s) in Wisconsin s/he lived.
Wisconsin Children's Authors & Illustrators: Developed as a project for UW-Milwaukee School of Information Studies class, this listing of selected Wisconsin authors and illustrators provides biographical information, a selected bilbiography, and occasional links to videos or other information for about 25 Wisconsin book creators. It is not intended to be comprehensive or to provide contact information.
Outside Wisconsin:
There are a number of commercial speakers bureaus and booking agencies that coordinate author and illustrator visits, but we have no way of knowing which are reliable. If you are trying to contact a specific author or illustrator to inquire about a visit but cannot locate contact information via a directory or the indivdiual's own web site, we recommend you get in touch with her or his publisher to make your request.
Many Regional Chapters of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), including have speakers directories of their members. Some are limited to authors or illustrators with published books; others are member lists that include aspiring writers and illustrators, and those who have been published in magazines.
The Children's Literature Network: this listing of many authors and illustrators often includes e-mail addresses and/or links to many of their websites.
Many individual states also have regional listings of children's authors and illustrators (these aren't necessarily speaker's directories but are meant to identify writers in/from a particular area). Search the internet if you are looking for authors from a particular region (e.g, "Georgia children's authors").
