Fantastic Fiction:
Great Fantasy Books for Ages 11 to 17

Compiled by Merri V. Lindgren and Hollis Rudiger
© 2005 Cooperative Children's Book Center

This bibliography was developed for the 2005 Wisconsin Summer Library Reading Program.

Book selection for this bibliography was driven by subject matter, literary quality, and age range. The titles included all fit somewhere within the wide scope of the fantasy genre.

Most of the book in this bibliography have been classified into one of the following categories, although many of the titles could easily fit into more than one:

  • Journeys, Quests and Discoveries
  • Magic and Mayhem
  • Eerie & Unnatural
  • Girl Power
  • Fairy Tales Unfolded
  • Reality with a Twist
  • Historical Imaginings
  • Future Possibilities
  • Superheroes & Superpowers: Comics and Graphic Novels

One aspect of the appeal of fantasy books has to do with characters who face great challenges and succeed against incredible odds. But the same quality can be found in many works of realistic ficion. One final category, Slaying the Metaphorical Dragon, features just a few examples of books in which a child or teen protagonist faces and ultimately overcomes difficult challenges in everyday life.

The comics and graphic novels featured in the Superheroes & Superpowers section often are titles that have multiple volumes. In most of cases, we have just highlighted the first one or two of a series.

Looking for ideas for younger readers? Check out Fantasy for 9 to 12 Year Olds: Borrowers, Boggarts, Broomsticks and Beyond.
