Tell Them We Remember:
Selected Literature for Children and Teens
about the Holocaust and World War II
Compiled by Megan Schliesman© 2007 Cooperative Children's Book Center; updated annually
There is a rich body of literature for children and teenagers about World War II. The books on this list provide perspectives on that time in history around the world. Many of them offer affecting looks at the experience of Jews during the Holocaust, while others touch on additional experiences in Europe, as well as in Asia and the Pacific. There are also books that offer a look at life on the “home front” here in the United States, including the experience of Japanese Americans who were incarcerated during the war.
The books on the list have been divided into five categories by format and/or age range:
• Bearing Witness: Memoirs and Autobiographies
• Documenting History: Books of Information
• Introducing a Painful Past: Picture Books
• Lives of Uncertainty: Fiction for Children
• Hard Truths: Fiction for Young Adults
With a few exceptions all of the books on the list were published in 1990 or later.
The title of this bibliography is taken from Susan D. Bachrach’s compelling look at the Holocaust in Tell Them We Remember: The Story of the Holocaust (listed in the "Documenting History" section).
