Global Reading:
Selected Literature for Children and Teens
Set in Other Countries

Compiled by Megan Schliesman
© 2007 Cooperative Children's Book Center

This bibliography was designed with U.S. readers in mind, so “other countries” refers to countries other than the United States.

Books on the list are arranged by geographic region of the world as follows:

• The Américas
• Africa
• Asia/Pacific
• Australia
• Europe
• Middle East
• Multinational

The regional categories are further subdivided by type of book: picture books, fiction, and non-fiction.

The books included depict both contemporary and historical life exclusive of World War II, which is covered in another CCBC bibliography: "Tell Them We Remember": Selected Books for Children and Teens about the Holocaust and World War II.

Some of the books on this list were originally published in other nations, and in other languages, giving readers here a glimpse not only of life in or the history of other parts of the world, but also of what children and teens elsewhere may be reading. Check out the Mildred L. Batchelder Award of the American Library Association for a list that focuses exclusively on translated books.

The CCBC's multicultural literature resource links provides links to information on books by and about people of color and includes resources that have an international scope.

Emphasis was placed on books published in 1990 or later; a few older books were chosen if they were translated or provide unique content.
