10 Quick Ways to Analyze Children's Books for Racism and Sexism
This thoughtful list was originated by the Council on Interracial Books for Children, a leading force in raising awareness on issues in evaluating multicultural literature for children and teens from the mid-1960s thorugh the mid 1980s.

A Critical Bibliography on North American Indians (K-12)
This bibliography includes a forward by Lisa Mitten on the importance of books that portray Native cultures accurately and authentically; an introduction that serves as a primer on evaluating books with Native content; and the books themselves, arranged by geographic region of North America. The books are concisely annotated and include general grade level recommendations.

Africa Access Review
This searchable database offers critical reviews of over 900 titles on Africa. The reviewers are content specialists who offer opinions on the strengths and/or weankess of each book, which are also given a rating of "Highly Recommended," "Recommended," "Advisory," "Marginal" or "Not Reommended."

American Indian Youth Literature Award

American Indians in Children's Literature Blog
Debbie Reese (Nambe Pueblo) provides a critical thoughts on children's and young adult literature by and about American Indians through this blog, which is an outstanding resource for librarians, teachers, and others to expand their own critical thinking, analaysis, and evaluation skills.

Barahona Center for the Study of Books in Spanish for Children and Adolescents
Provides a comprehensive, bilingual database by national expert Isabel Schon for books published in Spanish -speaking countries and/or translated into Spanish from other languages. It can be searched by author, title, subject, publisher, year of publication, country of origin and age level. Database entries include bibliographic information such as author, publisher and ISBN, a brief summary of the book, and a citation to a review in one of Schon's reference books.

Coretta Scott King Award
For the distinguished book by a Black author, and the distinguished by a black illustrator, that promote "understanding and appreciation of the "American Dream."

Coretta Scott King Book Awards Curriculum Resource Center
This unique and invaluable searchable database of Coretta Scott King award-winning books and honor books allows searching by subject area and/or grade level, and includes original interviews with the book creators about the books, and links to additional resources about the books.

Criticas
From the publishers of Library Journal and School Library Journal comes this journal devoted to Spanish language materials, including books and other media. Críticas offers librarians and others serving Spanish-language populations crticial reviews to help build and maintain Spanish language collections. On its web site, you can find archived articles, and special features such as annual "best of the year" Spanish language books and other resources, and lists such as "The Basics: 100 Fiction Titles You Should Stock."

Cynthia Leitich Smith's Resource Pages
There is a wealth of information about children's and young adult literature on author Cynthia Leitich Smith's site, including a commentary on multicultural literature and links to resources.

Multicultural Review
This journal focuses on race, ethnicity and religious diversity and provides reviews of books and other media with multicultural themes and topics, as well as articles on critical issues in multicultural literature and education. Native American Books
Part of Native American Indian Resources, an outstanding site created by Paula Giese for Native teachers and students, includes content reviews of books by and about American Indians, reviewed by Native critics such as Lisa Mitten and Naomi Caldwell Wood. The reviews are organized by subject, author, title, tribe, and age level.

Resource Bibliography for the Study of African-American Children's Literature
Part of the web site for the deGrummond Children's Literature Collection at the University of Southern Mississippi, this page is a terrific resource for getting started or continuing research into children's literature by and about African Americans. It features citations for publications that provide background in the subject, early and current history and criticism, evaluation tools, bibliographies of children's and young adult literature, and resources on using books in the classroom.

Rethinking Schools
This non-profit organization based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, blends progressive vision, theory, and practice in its work. Rethinking Schools produces publications to promote "equity and . . .the vision that public education is central to the creation of a humane, caring, multiracial democracy." Check out the "Archives" to get full-text access to selected articles in the quarterly Rethinking Schools journal, as well as the complete tables of contents.

Small Presses Owned and Operated By People of Color
The CCBC's own list of names and addresses of publishers of multicultural literature for children. Includes direct links to individual publishers' home pages, when available.

Teaching Tolerance
A project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Teaching Tolerance offers lesson plans, bibliographies and other curriculum materials for teaching respect for and appreciation of diversity. It also offers resources for parents, teens, and children. Use the site's "search" feature to locate specific types of materials.

The Black Experience in Children's Literature
This online exhibit showcases resources in the deGrummond Collection of Children's Literature at the University of Southern Mississippi. It provides an invaluable historical perspective on the depictions of African Americans in books for youth.
