Group 24: Julie Emmerich

My name is Julie Emmerich. I am an undergraduate student at the University of Wisconsin Platteville, and I am studying to become an engineer. I went to Madison West High School and was a member of the Band, Forensics Team, Japanese and Anime Club, Pep Band, National Honor Society, and Japanese Honor Society. I was Co-President of Japanese Club my senior year. At Platteville I am involved with the Society of Women Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and Intervarsity. My two favorite subjects so far are physics and geography. I enjoy learning about how things work, and about other cultures. I also love to travel. I traveled through Europe with People to People Student Ambassadors the summer before my freshman year of high school. I stayed with a family in Japan for six weeks through Youth For Understanding between my sophomore and junior year. My family then hosted a girl, Mutsumi from Japan the following year. During her stay Mutsumi and I went to a Stoughton school and taught a class of third graders about Japan. On my breaks from college I have worked at a grocery store as a cashier. I think College for Kids is a great way for kids to learn in a safe and fun environment. I want to be a part of College for Kids because I remember how much fun and how much I learned at summer camps and summer school activities. It is also a great leadership opportunity. Education is something that is very valuable and that many people take for granted. I believe that through education people become more open minded and accepting of the people around them. It also opens doors to many opportunities and experiences.
