Travel/Research Funds for Graduate Students in C&I

C&I has a small pool of money from the Graduate School ($5,000) to support graduate students for travel or research expenses. Top priority is given to dissertator travel to present a refereed, scholarly paper at a major conference, to receive a scholarly award from a national or international association, or to participate in a competitively selected colloquium or seminar. Second priority is given to offset expenses for dissertation data collection and/or preparation. Generally, you can receive these funds once; second requests for funds will only be considered after all first requests have been honored. Also, if funds remain near the end of spring semester, requests from students who are not dissertators will also be considered, although preference will still be given to dissertators. Eligibility In order to qualify, you must be a graduate student in good standing with the C&I department (no incompletes, 3.25 GPA or better) What Funds Are For 1. Travel to Present a Paper, Receive an Award, or Participate in a Scholarly Colloquium The award amount is contingent on distance traveled: $250 maximum for domestic travel and $500 maximum for international travel. All travel must occur prior to July 1, 2010 and priority is given to requests submitted before the event for which funding is sought. If requesting funds for travel to present a paper, the paper must be a refereed, scholarly paper to be presented at a meeting of a learned society of national or international scope. The paper need not be a presentation of dissertation-related research. If requesting funds for travel to receive an award or to participate in a scholarly colloquium, the award or participation selection process must be juried and competitive. 2. Dissertator Data Collection and/or Preparation Support for dissertator data preparation may not be used for writing and printing dissertations. It may in some cases be used to rent equipment if the rental is demonstrably essential to the conduct of the dissertation research. The committee has typically given partial support for costs of transcription and data analysis. Grants for this purpose have ranged from $100-$300.
