Welcome to the Mathematics Education home page at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The mathematics education area provides programs leading to teacher certification at the undergraduate level and to master's and doctoral degrees at the graduate level. All of our programs actively involve students in courses designed to help them attain their personal, educational, and professional goals.
Students completing the undergraduate program receive teaching certification at either the elementary school level or the secondary school level. Graduates of this program are highly regarded and continue to find teaching positions throughout Wisconsin as well as across the country. The continuing shortage of mathematics teachers nationwide promises to provide even greater employment opportunities in the coming years.
At the graduate level, the master's degree programs and doctoral degree program offer opportunities for students to increase their knowledge about the teaching and learning of mathematics, about the goals, content, and programs of school mathematics, about current research and issues in mathematics education, and about mathematics. The diverse and rich resources of the mathematics education area, in particular, and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, in general, also provide opportunities for a variety of research and teaching experiences. Given the fact that the Department of Curriculum and Instruction continues to be ranked as the top department in the country by the U.S. News and World Report, it is not surprising that our graduate students are highly sought after and have secured positions as senior teachers, district-wide mathematics coordinators, and, of course, faculty members in colleges and universities.
Since 1980, UW-Madison has graduated 84 PhDs in mathematics education and they provide significant leadership in the field both nationally and internationally. Graduates of our programs are on the faculties of major universities including: University of Georgia, University of Texas, University of California at Los Angeles, University of California at Davis, San Diego State University, Illinois State University, University of Colorado, University of Arizona, Arizona State University, University of Missouri, University of Delaware, Indiana University, University of Pittsburgh, SUNY at Albany, University of Minnesota, and University of Rochester.
