Jim Stewart received his Ph.D. in Science Education from Cornell University in 1978. Prior to that he had obtained both B.S. and M.S. degrees from the State University of New York at Geneseo and had been a high school biology teacher in the finger lakes region of New York State for several years.

His current research areas focus on understanding student learning, problem solving and reasoning, especially in genetics, evolutionary biology and astronomy. His research efforts have been
