Funding 

The vast majority of PhD students are fully funded for their years on campus through a combination of in-department and out-of-department assistantships and fellowships. Graduate assistantships and fellowships pay a monthly stipend, carry a full tuition waiver, and provide an excellent benefits package.

 

FELLOWSHIPS AND ASSISTANTSHIPS

Students admitted to the Ph.D. program in Counseling Psychology are eligible for several forms of financial assistance.  Both fellowships and graduate assistantships pay a stipend, provide tuition remission, and include health insurance.

FELLOWSHIP AWARDS

University Fellowship Competition - Departments nominate their most academically competitive Ph.D. candidates to the Divisional Fellowship Committee in early February. Awards are available to both incoming (including those who are transferring here with graduate work elsewhere) and continuing students who are at or near dissertation.  The maximum award for an incoming student for the Academic Year 2011-2012 (9 mos.) was $18,756 with remission of tuition, plus health insurance benefits.

Advanced Opportunity Fellowship (AOF) – To be eligible for AOF, a student must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident, admitted to or enrolled in a graduate department, with preference given to Wisconsin residents; and identify with one of the following groups: African American, Native American, Hispanic: Mexican Americans, Chicano/as, Puerto Ricans,  Southeast Asians: Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, and  Vietnamese OR McNair Students: students who participated in a McNair Program OR Wisconsin residents who are first generation to complete a Bachelors degree and who participated in a TRIO Program (Upward Bound, Talent Search, Educational). The Graduate School administers this fellowship. AOF stipends were approximately $14,892 for the 2011-2012 academic year (9 mos.) with remission of tuition (Fall and Spring semesters) and health insurance. Both M.S. and Ph.D. applicants are eligible for the AOF.

Note:  Applicants will be notified by the fellowships office in March or April if they have been selected to receive an award.

 

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

The Department of Counseling Psychology has a limited number of Program Teaching Assistantships.

Teaching Assistantships - The Department currently employs about 10-20 teaching assistants.  Teaching Assistant salary for 2011-2012 was based on a 33 1/3% appointment and was approximately $9382 for a 9 month appointment of a standard TA and included remission of tuition with benefits.  Salary amounts for TA positions are not negotiable.  The salary rate is determined by negotiations between the University and the Teaching Assistants Association (TAA union).  Positions in the Dept. of Counseling Psychology are announced in the spring to entering and continuing Doctoral students.  Students may also contact other departments for positions within their program.

Project Assistantships - Faculty in the Counseling Psychology Department hold research grants that employ Project Assistants.  Availability of such positions are announced to CP Doctoral students in the Spring for the upcoming year.  A Project Assistant appointment in the Department is usually a minimum 33 1/3% time and salaries range from $4,691(semester) to $11,513 (year). Positions include tuition remission and benefits. Students may also seek assistantships in other departments by contacting those departments directly.

 

A WORD ABOUT OUT-OF-DEPARTMENT ASSISTANTSHIPS

We have a strong commitment to fund our doctoral students with graduate assistantships and/or fellowships during their three to four years of coursework toward the PhD degree. Because we cannot fund all active Ph.D. students in the department, we expect incoming and returning students to seek funding outside the department as well as within the department. Graduate assistantships in other departments and administrative bodies value the professional and interpersonal skills that counseling psychology PhD students bring, and historically our students have been very successful in obtaining teaching assistantships and project assistantships outside the department.
