Preliminary Examinations

The preliminary examination in counseling psychology is designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate (and incentive to cultivate) a broad-based knowledge of research and theory in the field. Exams are designed to assess a student's knowledge of theory, practice, evaluation, professional issues, and multicultural and/or specific population issues in four major areas:

  1. Research and Evaluation
  2. Intervention (Individual and Group)
  3. Counselor Training and Supervision (or Instruction)
  4. Vocational Psychology

Students must complete and submit the Doctoral Preliminary Application Form to Maureen (Rm. 321B) at least 4 weeks prior to the exam date. A Minor Agreement Form must also be completed and on file. The preliminary examination guidelines are also available in pdf format [Preliminary Examination Policies].


Students are required to attend a brief testing orientation the week before exams at the test location. Students will be contacted regarding the day and time of this orientation. Prior exam questions from the last six exam administrations are also available from Maureen.

Exams are held from 8:30am - 12:30pm in room 330 of the Center for Instructional Materials and Computing (CIMC), located in the Teacher Education Building. The preliminary examinations test dates are:

Exams taken during the Summer Administration are not read until the following Fall semester. The preliminary examination dates are based on the following structure:

Fall exams
 -  first full week (M-F) of October
Spring exams
 -  first Monday after Spring Break
Summer exams
 -  last full week (M-F) of July
