Alberta M. Gloria

Professor

 

Alberta M. Gloria received her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Arizona State University. She interned at the University of California-Irvine and began her academic career at the University of Utah. Dr. Gloria joined the Department of Counseling Psychology at UW-Madison in 1996. She received tenure in 2000, promoted to full professor in 2004, and served as Director of Training from Fall 2000 to Spring 2006. In addition to her role as faculty with the Department of Counseling Psychology she was Director for the Chican@ Latin@ Studies Program (CLSP) at UW-Madison from 2006 to 2008. For the 2008-2009 academic year, Dr. Gloria received a one-year research fellowship and was the Chair of Humanistic Studies at Marquette University. She has served as the Chair of the Master's Program and Master's Admissions Chair in the Department of Counseling Psychology. Beginning Spring 2012, Dr. Gloria will serve as the Chair for the Department of Counseling Psychology.

 

Throughout her career she has sought to advance a Psychosociocultural model of understanding educational experiences for Chican@s, Latin@s, and other racial and ethnic minority students in higher education. Concerns of self-beliefs, social supports, and cultural connections are central to her approach to support students within the academic environment.

 

She teaches both masters and doctoral courses and teaches an undergraduate course on interviewing which emphasizes cultural communication. Other classes she has teaches include: Chican@ Latin@ Psychology; Community Counseling Supervision; and Multicultural Counseling.

 

Dr. Gloria has several research teams including the Hmong Research Team (HRT) and the ANDALE Team. Both teams, which involve undergraduates and graduate students, have presented locally and nationally, and have submitted projects for publication. In particular, the teams involve several McNair Scholars and undergraduates interested in pursing graduate school. The HRT secured funding and coordinated a one-day Hmong Parents' Day / Hnub Txhawb Nqa Niam Txiv on 9 April 2011 based on the findings from several of the research team projects. Given the success of the day, a second Hmong Parents' Day was hosted by the HRT on 14 April 2012.

 

Dr. Gloria is the Past Chair of the Section on Ethnic and Racial Diversity for Division 17 and past Latina/o Member-at-Large for Division 45 (Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues). She is the Past President of Section III (Latina/Hispanic Women's Concerns) for Division 35 (Society for the Psychology of Women). She is also the past Chair of Section Chairs for Division 17 (Society for Counseling Psychology) (2005-2007). She is a Fellow of Divisions 45 and 17 of the APA and she has been nationally recognized on several occasions:

 

 

In 1999, she was awarded the Women of Color Psychologies Award from Division 35 (Psychology of Women) of the APA for her work entitled, The cultural construction of Latinas: Practice implications of multiple realities and identities.

She was awarded the 2002 Emerging Professional Award from Division 45 of the APA for outstanding early career contributions in promoting ethnic minority issues in the field of psychology.

In 2003, Dr. Gloria was awarded the Kenneth and Mamie Clark Award from the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students for her contributions to the professional development of ethnic minority graduate students.

Dr. Gloria was selected as Woman of Color of the Year for the Madison Campus by the University of Wisconsin System Schools for 2006-2007 for her mentorship and advancement of women of color.

She received the 2008 Outstanding Latina/o Faculty in Research/Teaching in Higher Education (Research Institutions) from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education in March 2008.

Dr. Gloria was selected for one of two Distinguished Faculty Awards for the School of Education in 2011 and was the inaugrual recipient for the Excellence in Diversity Award for her work in the School of Education and on the Univeristy of Wisconsin-Madison campus in 2012.
