Shoshana Hellman

Dr. Shoshana Hellman received her undergraduate degree from the Hebrew University in Israel. Her Masters degree from the Sorbonne, Paris and then, in the US, she earned M.A. and Ed.M. degrees in Guidance and counseling and Ed.D., in Counseling Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University NY (1980). After receiving her doctorate, she spent the majority of her professional life in Israel, working for the Ministry of Education, Psychological Services as a senior supervisor for school counselors, and in academics there, teaching supervision and career development courses. Other work experiences included consultation to a high tech company, outplacement counseling, and various professional development workshops for teachers and counselors. In the US, she was involved in counseling for community mental health agencies .During the last six years in addition to academic teaching and supervision of counselors; she worked in a private practice setting with individuals, couples and families. Her theoretical orientation is eclectic with an extensive training in solution focused and brief modalities such as CBT.

Areas of primary interest and research include professional development of counselors, career development, cross-cultural studies in school counseling and recently, counselors coping with terror and in times of war. She co-authored articles in the Israeli Journal of Educational Counseling, British Journal of Guidance and Counseling, and International Journal of Counseling (in press). She also co-authored chapters in Hebrew in several books and in English in Training Counseling Supervisors and in Counseling Supervision in Context (Sage Publication). She is a member of the APA division 17, clinical member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Within the department of Counseling Psychology at UW- Madison, Dr. Shoshana Hellman coordinates the Program for Advanced Studies in Professional Counseling. This program prepares post-graduate counselors for their licensure as Professional Counselors (LPC). Dr. Shoshana Hellman is teaching a continuous supervision course and provides weekly individual supervision for students working as counselors in various sites. Students can also participate in advanced courses of supervision at the department.
