Research Interests

Dr Thompson’s research examines the construct of Differential Status Identity (DSI) and other class-related variables in relation to educational persistence, vocational development, and mental health.  She draws from sociological and psychological theories regarding the related constructs of social status, social class, and SES.  Most of her research projects examine similarities and differences among these class-related variables in an attempt to more clearly understand their differential prediction of various outcomes.  As such, her current research projects include:

  • Psychometric examinations of various measures of class-related constructs, including the Differential Status Identity Scale (Brown et al., 2002), the Experiences with Classism scale (Thompson, 2008), and other sociological indicators of social class.
  • Exploring social status, racial/ethnic identity, and experiences with cultural isms as they interact and relate to educational persistence, vocational development, and mental health.  These projects vary in the extent to which they focus on specific ethnic groups (i.e., Native/First Americans) and other background characteristics (e.g., First Generation College Students).
  • Investigating the experiences of psychotherapy for individuals from low-income backgrounds as well as the extent to which diverse income levels have been adequately integrated into the EST/EVT movement.
