Dr. Patricia Wolleat has a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota (1971) and a J.D. from the University of Wisconsin (1987). She joined the Wisconsin faculty in 1971 and served as Chair from 1987-1990. Prior to that she worked as an English/Social Studies teacher and as a counselor in several agencies including the U. S. Employment Service and the VA. Dr. Wolleat has been associated with counselor training and supervision at the University of Minnesota, College of St. Thomas, and the University of California-Santa Barbara. Dr. Wolleat's primary research and teaching interests are in four areas: legal and ethical issues in counseling psychology; sexism and sex role issues in education, counseling, and psychology; career development (particularly of women); and counselor preparation and supervision. Her theoretical approach to counseling is best described as eclectic with the primary emphasis on cognitive and cognitive-behavioral techniques. From 1977-79 she was co-director of a project, Multiplying Options and Subtracting Bias, an intervention program that focused on mathematics avoidance as a critical factor in career development. Dr. Wolleat has published articles appearing in: The School Counselor, Elementary School Counseling and Guidance, Vocational Guidance Quarterly, Career Development Quarterly, Counselor Education and Supervision, Journal of Counseling Psychology, The Counseling Psychologist, Journal of Research in Mathematics Education and the American Education Research Journal. She is currently serving and/or has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Counseling Psychology, Counselor Education and Supervision, Vocational Guidance Quarterly, the Wisconsin Counselor, and Exceptional Children. She also reviews articles frequently for the Review of Educational Research and the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education. Dr. Wolleat's activities in professional association have been primarily in making the profession more sensitive to the needs of women. She was co-founder of the Women's Caucus of the Wisconsin Personnel and Guidance Association and she served on the Committee on Women of the Division of Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Wolleat has served on Division 17 task forces on developing standards for counseling with women and in integrating women's issues into counselor education curricula. In 1989 she was appointed to the Division 17 Committee on Ethics. Dr. Wolleat completed a law degree in 1987. She is interested in the integration of counseling psychology and law through the development of departmental courses on Law and Ethics.
