Outreach Mission

Outreach Mission Statement:

Our outreach mission is to prepare high quality scholars and practitioners to be effective leaders in an increasingly diverse world.  In addition to our core mission of training psychologists, community mental health counselors, and professional school counselors, the department is actively engaged in the preparation of undergraduates and in-service professionals in the development of the competencies that are relevant for success in a pluralistic society.  We achieve these goals through our outreach service, teaching, and research. 

Outreach Services:

Social Justice Conference: A department sponsored endeavor seeking to address issues of equity and justice, and incite dialogue and awareness of these issues amongst academicians and community leaders.

Diversity Dialogues: An initiative to address cultural awareness within the UW-Madison campus community.

Diversity Committee: A community of culturally diverse professionals that coordinate programming seeking to foster intercultural learning and awareness.

Wisconsin Counseling and Development Clinic: A training clinic for Post-Master’s and Doctoral level students to provide diverse and culturally informed psychological services to the Madison community on a sliding scale fee. For further information, please contact: Dr. Teresa Bear, Dr. Shoshana Hellman, or The Counseling Psychology Department.

TRIO: A Student Support Service program that provides academic and social support to culturally diverse students and students with disabilities.

PEOPLE Program: A pre-college program for low income and diverse youth that strengthens study skills, and explores academic and career interests.  

 

Faculty Outreach Services:

Hardin L. K. Coleman: Provide consultation services to community mental health agencies (e.g., UJIMA Counseling Services), vision and directorship of Professional Development Programs (e.g., Programs of Advanced Studies), partnership with the Madison Metropolitan School District Counselors, and Cultural Competence assessment to area school districts (e.g., Verona Area School District).  

Alberta Gloria: Provide consultation to the training and development of the Chicano/a Latino Studies Program and consultation to the Latino/a Faculty Staff Association.

Corissa Lotta: Serve on the advisory committee for the Wisconsin Center for Academically Talented Youth (WCATY).

Yuki Okubo (Visiting Assistant Professor):  Provide support in reviewing proposals for AAPA’s (Asian American Psychological Association) 2007 Annual Convention, and a member of the Social Justice and Diversity Committee.

Stephen Quintana: Serve on APA's Committee on International Relations in Psychology, consult with the Institute for Social Development in Cary, NC, panel chair for the National Science Foundations, Psychology division, serve on the review panel for predoctoral fellowship applications for the Ford Foundation, and associate editor for the Journal of Counseling Psychology.

Carmen Valdez: Serve on the Board of the Latino Health Council and assist in the programming of events. Compose stories about Latinos and depression, three of which have been published in La Comunidad, a local newspaper in Madison.

Student Outreach Services:

Professional Development Plan Reviewers: Stephen L. Gresham, Doriane D. Besson, Le Ondra Clark, Jenny Lindwall, Laura Fillingame-Knudtson, Amanda Sommerfeld, Kevin Laska, and Amanda Bohlig.

Outreach Teaching:

Academic Enhancement Seminars: One-credit courses focusing on developing effective coping and time management skills, and improving academic and social communication.

Advanced Studies in Professional Counseling: A program of study assisting in the academic and professional development of post-masters counselor working toward licensure.

Advanced Studies in Equity & Cultural Competence: A program of 4 seminars (Diversity Dialogues, Multicultural Competence, Psychosocial Factors in Student Achievement, Truancy) focusing on assisting participants in the development of  awareness, knowledge, and skills in serving a culturally diverse community.

Advanced Studies in Engaged Pedagogy: A program of courses that provides initial educators and other school-based educators with professional development support.

Student Outreach Teaching:

Teaching Fellows involved in the Advanced Studies Program in Equity & Cultural Competence: Stephen L. Gresham, Jenny Lindwall, Le Ondra Clark, Amanda Sommerfeld, Laura Fillingame-Knudtson, Kevin Laska, and Amanda Bohlig.

Outreach Research:

Carmen Valdez: Conduct an evaluation of a video program designed to decrease stigma about depression. The video is called, “It’s time: Teen and Youth Depression.” Develop evaluation instruments about the quality of the program and the knowledge that teachers have acquired as a result of the program. Conduct focus groups with teachers about the program’s effectiveness in schools, and provide an evaluation report to the developers of the program. The data will be submitted for publication at a peer-reviewed journal.

 

Bruce Wampold: Provide research presentations to academic and professional communities on evidence-based practice.

Bill Hoyt: Consult with organizations working on bereavement issues (e.g., Association of Death Education Counselors; National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization), provide interpretations of empirical literature on grief counseling, and assist ADEC in the preparation of a news brief summarizing recent developments in this area for its members.
