History, Purpose, and Goals of Social Justice Conference
Dr. Janice Yoder’s visit to UW on May 1, 2009
Every time we meet someone, we automatically sort them into one of two social categories: female or male. This simple designation has widespread implications for how we regard women and men as similar or different and for the expectations and social status we attribute to them. Indeed, this fundamental building block of human thinking (categorization) has implications for essentializing differences between women and men that can perpetuate stereotyped expectations, underlie social status differences, and maintain social inequalities.
As a textbook author and incoming editor of the top journal in the psychology of women, Dr. Yoder will give the general audience a broad overview of the field of the psychology of women. She will also lay the groundwork for specialized discussions with graduate students and colleagues on topics of subjective essentialism, the history of the study of gender comparisons, and recent innovations exploring the confounding of gender with social status. The recipient of four teaching awards, including the Heritage Award for Teaching and Mentoring from the Society for the Psychology of Women (APA Division 35), Dr. Yoder will make complex concepts on gender resonate with students' experiences, yet remain well-grounded in the scholarship of her discipline.
Dr. Yoder will also facilitate a series of conversations focused on exploring how everyday interactions are confounded with gender as a social construction, and their implications for women’s identity, well being, and social change. Dr. Yoder will also offer a seminar in which she will specifically discuss her role as incoming editor of The Psychology of Women Quarterly. The seminar will introduce interested students and faculty to the journal, provide students with mentoring around the submission process for their own research, and share an overview of the editorial processes involved in peer reviewed journals.
