Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST)

The Praxis I/PPST is a basic skills test with three subtests: Reading, Writing and Mathematics. It is offered by Educational Testing Service (ETS) and required for admission to all Wisconsin teacher preparation programs by the State Department of Public Instruction (DPI).

Registration

Test takers must register for the paper-based PPST at least 30 days in advance. This can be done by mail or on the web. Obtain the most current Registration Bulletin at the website listed below for information on test dates, registration deadlines, a registration form, and additional information for the Praxis I-PPST. Register for three tests: Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. A fee is required; consult the ETS website for information about this year’s fees.

Test takers must list a “recipient code” to indicate where scores will be reported. The recipient code for UW-Madison School of Education is 1846.

For complete registration information, see the ETS website (www.ets.org/portal/site/ets).

The Praxis I PPST test names and numbers are:

PPST: Reading                 Test number: 0710
PPST: Writing                   Test number: 0720
PPST: Mathematics           Test number: 0730

Fee Waivers

A limited number of fee waivers are available for enrolled undergraduate or graduate students who meet eligibility requirements. To be considered for a fee waiver, submit a completed Fee Waiver Request form or CBT Fee Waiver Request form and registration form by the appropriate deadline, as shown on each fee waiver request form. All fee waiver requests are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. You are eligible for a fee waiver only once during a testing year. If you qualify, your $40 registration fee and one test fee and/or three Computerized PPST tests may be waived. See the ETS/Praxis I site for more detailed information.

Testing Format and Dates

The Praxis I Assessments are available in two formats, paper-based and computer-based. Both measure similar academic skills and cover similar content, but the computer-based tests provide an immediate score in reading and math and may be available on demand throughout the year by appointment, often eliminating the need to register weeks in advance. The paper-based Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) is offered six times a year on campus.

Accommodations

Nonstandard testing accommodations are available for test takers who meet ETS requirements. See Resources for Test Takers with Disabilities for additional information.

Preparation Aids

Tests at a Glance are available on-line (see ETS/Praxis web site listed above) and include content outlines, sample questions, rationale for the best answers, and test-taking strategies. Study guides are also available from ETS, or at local bookstores. The Center for Instructional Materials and Computing (CIMC), located in the Teacher Education building at 225 N. Mills street has test preparation materials resources. See http://cimc.education.wisc.edu/ed%5Finfo/professional%5Fguides/praxis.html

Computer Based Testing

Computer Based Testing is available at a number of sites in Wisconsin. The Madison site is located at the Prometric Testing Center, 5520 Medical Circle, Suite E, Madison, Wisconsin 53719. Phone: (608)231-6270.
