Minors for Elementary Education Students

Students must select a minor area of study chosen from a current list of approved subject areas. Minor requirements vary from 22-27 credits, depending on the subject area of interest, and may be chosen in consultation with an advisor in Education Academic Services or the assigned Elementary Education faculty advisor. A minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.75 is required, based on all UW-Madison course work included in the minor. Students must file a minor declaration form at the time they accept admission to an Elementary Education program option.

Elementary Education students may select from among these minor options:

• Secondary Education minors in the subjects listed below. Students selecting a Secondary Education minor are only required to complete the subject area course work, i.e., students do not have to complete methods, practicum, or student teaching course work in the minor subject area.
  • Anthropology
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Economics
  • English
  • Geography
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • Physics

  • Political Science

  • Psychology

  • Sociology
• An academic minor in any of the following languages below. These minors do not lead to certification in the subject area, but allow students to develop oral and written skills in a second language.
• French
• German
• Hebrew and Semitic Studies
• Italian
• Latin
• Polish
• Portuguese
• Spanish
• Elementary Education minors in the following subjects:
• Afro-American Studies
• Dance
• English Language Arts
• Health
• Mathematics
• Mathematics-Science Dual Minor
• Science: Earth Science and General/Broad Field Science Minor
• Theatre and Drama
• Any UW-Madison College of Letters and Science major. See the Undergraduate Catalog for a list of L&S majors.
• Any UW-Madison certificate program. Click here for a list of certificate programs. If the certificate program is less than 24 credits, the student will consult with the Elementary Education faculty advisor and the certificate program advisor to determine appropriate 200-level and above courses to take toward the 24-credit minimum.
• Completion of an undergraduate degree in a field other than education. If a student has completed an undergraduate education degree, her/his record may be reviewed by the faculty advisor and Education Academic Services staff to determine if the equivalent of any of the previous options has been completed.
