Michael Kirst, Professor, Stanford University

Michael Kirst, Professor, Stanford University

Dr. Kirst's talk will focus on the history and effectiveness of federal and state policies to improve schools. The talk will start by discussing what types of reforms historically tend to last and which are ephemeral, or ebb and flow. It will follow with a look at successive waves of federal and state reforms in terms of their strategy and impact. Dr. Kirst will then conclude with a detailed analysis of the standards-based reform, its key components, and future outlook.

The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis is pleased to join the School of Education’s annual celebration of American Education Week with a day-long conference addressing critical issues of educational leadership and policy.

We have much to celebrate with the conference:

1) Our new name: Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (ELPA);
2) The addition of Continuing and Vocational Education (CAVE) to our department’s programmatic offerings;
3) The career of Professor Jacob (Jay) Stampen, who retired last year after 22 years of service to the Department.
