Burmaster Recognizes 9 Global Educators

Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster, joined by UW Dean of Education Charles Read and UW International Studies Dean Gilles Bousquet, honored seven state educators and two media outlets for outstanding work to further global education.

The awards were presented as part of the Education across Six Continents; Teaching and Curriculum for a Global Society Conference, sponsored by the University of Wisconsin School of Education and co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Chapter of the Fulbright Association Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Friends of International Education, and the Wisconsin Education Association Council. The conference focused on models of excellence from abroad and best practices around Wisconsin in technology, language study, teaching aboard, student exchange programs, global studies curriculum, and education to build global competencies.

Educators honored include:

Audray Weber -Excellence in World Language Instruction Award

Cushing Elementary School, Kettle Moraine School District
A Spanish teacher for 20 years, Audray Weber has been instrumental in developing one of the state’s premier elementary – level world language programs and in developing curriculum for young children.

William Sepnafski – Global Teacher Award

Social Studies Teacher, Menasha High School, Menasha Wisconsin
A social studies teacher since 1973, William Sepnafski was recognized for his excellence in teaching such courses as World Problems, Youth Service Learning, and Advanced Placement World History. He accepted the award on behalf of 10 area schools, for their collaboration in creating a Sister Cities Youth Conference in the Fox Cities, which included live video interconnect with Russian students and an opportunity to meet, in person, Past President of the former Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev.

Joe Young – Global Teacher Award

Elementary Teacher, Rocky Branch Elementary School, River Falls
Once a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal, Joe Young, has, from the beginning of this teacher career, brought the world into his classroom. He was recognized for his leadership and for his collaborative work with area teachers in bringing the resources of the iEARN computer –project into the district.

Marty and Jim Harris – Global Educator Awards

Retired Educators, Mosinee, Wisconsin
D.C. Everest Area School District retired principal Jim Harris, and Wausau School District retired art educator Marty Harris are bridging the distance between Wausau and Laos, with their repeated trips to bring back cultural artifacts. Their multimedia exhibit at the Marathon County Historical Society, “Changing Worlds, Changing Lives: From Laos to Wisconsin”, which will be viewed by 3,000 area children this month. The exhibit makes complex topics, like the Hmong reasons for immigration and unexploded ordinance which is still injuring Southeast Asian children today, comprehensible to local students.

Eileen McNamara – Excellence in Outreach to PK-12 Schools Award

Assistant Director, University of Wisconsin-Madison African Studies Program
Eileen McNamara has brought innovation and excellence to her extensive outreach to elementary and secondary level teachers. She has brought Francophone African culture to life through original curriculum work and by leading a Fulbright Hays Group Projects Abroad seminar to the West African nation of Benin.

Elvira Craig de Silva – Excellence in Curriculum Innovation Award

Associate Dean, Waukesha County Technical College
Elvira Craig de Silva developed a Medical Interpreter Certificate, recognized as a model for providing much-needed technical-level interpreters for area hospitals and social services. The 16-credit certificate gives speakers with native-language proficiency with important business sectors.

Rethinking Schools – Excellence in International Education Media Award

Milwaukee Wisconsin
This outstanding national magazine, featuring issues of social justice and globalization, is one of the only journals of its stature written and edited by practicing classroom teachers. Rethinking Schools was honored for its important voice in educational and cultural debates and in assuring that the thinking of busy teachers is reflected in a significant intellectual forum

The Madison Times – Excellence in International Education Media Award

Jonathon Gramling, Editor; Heidi Pasqual, Associate Editor, Madison, Wisconsin
The Madison Times was recognized for its remarkable ability to juxtapose local Madison news, especially seldom covered issues in minority communities and from minority perspectives, with international news. Its award cited positive coverage of local issues, including education events, and its visionary marriage of international and multicultural perspectives.
