Department alumnus David Weerts received the Bobby Wright Dissertation of the Year Award Nov. 17 in Sacramento, during the annual meeting of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). Professor Roger Baldwin of the College of William and Mary, Chair of the 2000 Bobby Wright Dissertation Committee, stated that the committee was impressed with the quality and significance of Weerts's dissertation, "Understanding Differences in State Support for Higher Education: A Comparative Study of State Appropriations for Research I Universities."

Professor Carolyn Kelley's contributions recognized with UCEA's 1999 Culbertson Award

UW-Madison Chancellor David Ward; writer, activist and educator Parker J. Palmer; and other leaders from the state and region.
Colin Latchem, International Consultant in Open Learning and former Head of Teaching and Learning for Curtain University of Technology (Perth, Australia), offered a brownbag seminar Tues., Sept. 26, 2000, from noon to 1:15 p.m. in Rm. 259 of the Educational Sciences Building.
Dr. Sorensen and Professor Mead met with a Tajikistani delegation of educational administrators visiting the Department Sept. 26 to discuss the impact of a voucher system and charter schools on the administration of state-run education, and the effects of such programs on the quality of education. Hosted by the International Institute of Wisconsin, located in Milwaukee, the delegation is examining competition within their own educational system as a way to improve education in Tajikistan, formerly a Soviet republic.
Department Ph.D. dissertator Kristin Cardinale has accepted a job as Director of International Student & Scholar Services at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. With strong support from its chancellor, Nancy Zimpher, UWM has recently opened The Center for International Education. Kristin, who assisted with the Department's "Public School Administration in America" course geared especially toward international students, and who took a semester last year to sail around the world facilitating a shipboard education program, will be involved in the development of this new UWM program.
Department alumnus David Weerts is a finalist for the Bobby Wright Dissertation of the Year Award, bestowed annually by the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE).

Department alumnus Lamont Colucci assigned to South Korea as U. S. Foreign Service political officer
The Department held a welcome and orientation party on Friday, Sept. 8, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the 13th Floor lounge of the Educational Sciences Building. A reception followed at the home of the Department Chair, Prof. Allen Phelps, to welcome Dr. Jerlando Jackson and new students.

In an article on major overhauls needed in doctoral education, the Chronicle of Higher Education cites research by Professor Golde on frustrations of Ph.D. students over training and job prospects.
In its annual special issue ranking graduate schools, U.S. News & World Report quotes Prof. Golde in an article on the realities of pursuing a Ph.D. An accompanying article includes research by Department alumnus (1999) Gordon Hewitt, who found that 90 percent of professors believe unions do not interfere with their ability to mentor or teach grad students.

The meeting time in the Spring 2000 Semester for Ed. Admin. 736: Administration of Student Services in Higher Education, has been made later, 7:15 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., on Mondays to avoid scheduling conflicts with other popular and required courses.
The weekend class schedule has been revised for Ed. Admin. 880: Academic Programs in Colleges and Universities, in Spring 2000. The first class will meet Tuesday, Jan. 25, from 7:15 to 10:00 p.m. in Room 303 Educational Sciences. Thereafter it will meet Fridays from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the following four weekends: Feb. 4-5, Feb. 25-26, March 31-April 1, and April 28-29, 2000.
