Professional Activities:

Professional Experiences and Activities:
In 1986 , while still at King’s College, University of London UK, Taneri (among other Turkish Cypiots) was one of the few invited by the Government Officials to return North Cyprus so as to contribute to the establishment of the first university of the island: the Eastern Mediterranean University. She was one of a handful people to be involved in the establishment. Therefore, the below given information reflects Taneri’s administrative duties , her interests in Quality Efforts in Higher Education and Strategic Planning, and inevitably the dedication to Quality Teaching and Research ( quality research personally :through long and short term Research Visits abroad (UK, USA, Canada, Europe) and continued collaborations, and institution wise: by setting standards for graduate studies of the Department).

1995 - Eastern Mediterranean University EMU , North Cyprus.
Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science.*

2003 June Was shortlisted as one of the five finalists for the position of the
Chancellor at the Eastern Mediterranean University. (The Senate
of the University votes and the final say is from the Board of
Trustees).

1993-1995 University of Waterloo UW , Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
Dept. of Applied Mathematics and Dept. of Systems Design Engineering.
Sabbatical. Visiting Professor / Research Associate.

1986-1993 Eastern Mediterranean University EMU, North Cyprus.
Founding Head of Department of Chemistry 1986-1992.
Degree Programs Established Were:
1. BS in Chemistry. MS/PhD in Chemistry.
2. BS in Chemistry with Management Studies.
3. BS in Chemistry with Computer Science.

1984-1986 King`s College, University of London UK
Quantum Theory Research Group. Department of Chemistry.

1980-1981 GEC General Electronics Company Stanmore UK
Systems Design Engineer. Appointed as a Mathematcian to do Research on Cylindrical Array Antennas. ( Taneri worked at GEC for 15 months during which time she initiated the PhD Studies as well on one-day-a week bases. After 15 months, she decided for Full-Time PhD studies before beginning to enjoy the working life ).

Chemistry Department at EMU is no longer registering students for undergraduate studies, and only a few are on the Graduate Program. (Since 1994) . It is a Service Department for Engineering and Sciences Faculties. This decision was taken by the University Executive Board (when Taneri was in Canada) based on almost nill number of applicants for Chemistry Studies and the expense of running such a department. Therefore, Since her return from Canada (1995), Taneri with her Double Major in Mathematics and Chemistry, and specialization in Quantum and Stability Theories which are highly mathematical and computational, has been a Member of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. In 1986, the establishment of EMU’s Mathematics Department was already assigned to someone else; hence Taneri got involved with the establishment of the Department of Chemistry.

Philosophies

Taneri’s Philosophies for Teaching , Research, and Administration have clearly shaped with years’ education and experiences, academic mobility, international collaborations, and last but not the least by the influences of world’s top universities like UW-Madison.

Teaching Experience:

EMU’s medium of Education is English. As a new university, EMU has primarily been a Teaching University. Since 1992 (extensively from 1995 onwards) the university has started the Graduate Programs as well. Still, teaching load of the instructors is 10-12 hours/week for Senior Members and more hours for Junior Members of the faculty. One is not entitled to teaching during Summer School unless she/he is willing to do so. It’s been Taneri’s principle to carry full-time research over the Summers and in U.K., Europe, Canada or US as well as through sabbaticals like two years in Canada 1993-95.

Some of the Undergraduate Courses Taught:
Calculus I and II
Differential Equations and Linear Algebra
Management Mathematics

Recent contribution to North Cyprus:

“Efforts for the Establishment of First Research Institute”

Earlier given http address http://193.140.45.126/taneri summarizes the intend, the vision and mission of the establishment of the first Research Institute in North Cyprus. Taneri was supported by the President of Turkish Republic of North Cyprus to prepare the grounds for the establishment of such an institute. With its almost 200,000 population, North Cyprus now has five universities first of which is EMU (established in 1986). Establishment Efforts for the institute is now complete with its first five year Budget worked out, Project Proposals and related documents all filed .
Completed Report of Establishment was submitted to the authorities in the first week of July 2001. This was then presented to the authorities and in presence of the President, on November 21st, 2001. The idea received full support. But, due to the financial crisis in Turkey, the establishment has to wait for better financial medium.
