Education

I completed my undergraduate and graduate studies in the Pacific Northwest states of Washington and Oregon:

B.S. Family and Consumer Education, University of Washington, 1971
M.Ed. Career and Technical Education, Oregon State University, 1975
Ed.D. Career and Technical Education and Family Economics,
Oregon State University, 1978

Research and Scholarly Interests

My research, teaching and service focuses on enhancing economic opportunities and economic well-being among youth and adults, particularly those representing underserved populations.  I am also interested in academic program leadership in K-12 and higher education settings; the latter of which is directly related to my joint appointment at UW-Madison as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Programs in the School of Human Ecology.

I currently direct two research projects at UW-Madison, both funded by the National Endowment for Financial Education.  One is investigating the impact of state-level financial literacy education mandates on the consumer behavior and pre-behavior of college-age students.  The other project is studying financial issues and personal finance teaching capacity among K-12 educators.  In addition, I am directing two program development projects for the School of Human Ecology this year, both funded by the UW-Madison central administration.  These include a technology enhanced learning project to develop a library of learning objects that will serve students in both academic content and internship courses and an academic assessment project that will enhance ability to use information about student learning for purposes of strategic academic planning.

Personal Statement

I joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in August of 1978 with a joint appointment in the Schools of Education and Human Ecology.  I currently serve as Professor of Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis and Professor and Associate Dean in the School of Human Ecology.  In Human Ecology, I direct the undergraduate teacher certification program in Family and Consumer Education, provide leadership for undergraduate academic and credit outreach programs throughout the School, and advise the UW-Madison student chapter of the Wisconsin Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (WAFCS).  Between 2002 and 2004 I served as Acting Director of the UW-Madison Center on Education and Work in the School of Education.  For the past several years, I have chaired the UW-Madison Committee on Retirement Issues and served as a member of the University Academic Planning Council, University Assessment Council, and Council of Associate Deans.  Other leadership activities beyond campus have included serving as Editor of both the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal and the Journal of Vocational Education Research, chairing the National Coalition for Family and Consumer Sciences Education, filling terms as a member of the Wisconsin Superintendent of Public Instruction Task Force on Financial Literacy Education, and an educational consultant to Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates.
