2008 Faculty Distinguished Achievement Awards

Distinguished Achievement Awards will be given each year to two faculty members who have made particularly significant contributions to the School of Education during their careers. The award is based on contributions in teaching, research, and service. The particular areas of emphasis are less important than the overall significance of the contributions. Recipients will receive $1,000, made possible by gifts from the alumni of the School. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at which the academic staff and classified staff awards also will be presented. All faculty and staff members in the School are invited to this reception, to be held at 4:00 p.m. in the Virginia F. Harrison Parlor on the first floor of Lathrop Hall.

There are many individuals who are deserving of this honor. Regrettably, only two awards can be presented each year, and inevitably some outstanding candidates will be passed over the first year they are put forward. Nominations remain active for two years beyond the year of submission.

To be eligible, faculty members nominated for the award must have their tenure home in the School of Education and must have been on the faculty at UW-Madison for at least five years. Each department is encouraged to submit one departmental nomination. In addition, any faculty or staff member or any student may submit a nomination.

A faculty committee appointed by the Dean will select the recipients; this year’s committee consists of B. Bradford Brown, Stephen Quintana (2007 award recipients), and Associate Dean Robert Tabachnick. The Dean will make the final selection based on the recommendations of the review committee, and recipients will be informed in March.

An application package consists solely of (1) a nomination letter that explains why the nominee deserves the award and (2) the nominee’s complete vita. Nominees are expected to have made contributions and demonstrated continued excellence in each of the three areas of teaching, research, and service.

Nominations should be sent to Judy Holt, 427 Education Building, and received no later than Tuesday, February 26, 2008. For more information, call Judy at 265-7875.
