ATEP to Offer New Scholarship
March 1, 2007

The Athletic Training Education Program will offer a new scholarship for the 2007-08 academic years. In addition to the Gordon Stoddard Scholarship and our general scholarship program, the ATEP will offer the Janet Helwig Scholarship. This scholarship is made possible by a generous gift from program alumnus Dr. Carole Street-Vetter. Dr. Vetter is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She was an athletic training student at the UW-Madison and worked as a staff athletic trainer at the University of Minnesota prior to starting medical school.

In giving the gift Dr. Vetter commented, "Jan Helwig's outstanding achievements in the field of athletic training and personal demeanor on and off the field inspire all who work with her. She has been and continues to be an exceptional role model for athletes and students, teaching life's lessons of professionalism and work ethic."

Students are nominated for ATEP scholarship by clinical staff. To be eligible for a scholarship AT students must demonstrate a sincere interest in athletic training (students may have stated goals to study other subjects in graduate school - however their interest in their current program should be obvious). Candidates should show a genuine curiosity about their athletic training subject matter and display an interest in learning. They should be students who are willing to make the most of their clinical learning opportunities and demonstrate the ability to effectively manage their academic responsibilities. Scholarship recipients should seek to both contribute to and grain from their experiences.

The Jan Helwig Scholarship is targeted to a returning female student who meets the above criteria. The Jan Helwig Scholarship seeks to recognize a strong independent thinker who demonstrates patient advocacy skills within the framework of their professional boundaries.

The ATEP is pleased to grow its scholarship program through the generosity of program alumni and the cooperation of the Wisconsin Alumni Association. Please visit our giving page if you
