FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Why do I get the message, “pre-requisites not met” when registering for a PE Activity class that does not list any pre-requisites?

This is a message that appears when one attempts to register for more than one PE Activity class, other than PE 100.

SOLUTION:  If you wish to take more than one PE Activity class in a semester, register for your first choice and then contact the instructor of your second choice and request to be put on a “wait list”.  Once all students have had the opportunity to register for classes, you may then be given a “permission” to register for that class if a seat becomes available.  Otherwise, attend the first class period and see if there were enough “no shows” that a seat will become available.  This happens with great regularity!

2.  Is there anything I can do if a class is full?

You can request the course instructor, via email,  to put you on their wait listInstructor emails are available under the contents link of this web page.

3.  How does a “wait list” operate?

A wait list is started by an instructor of any course section as soon as he/she is contacted by a student requesting to be put on a “wait list”  because the class is closed.  Many instructors will watch their class enrollment and as seats become available, due to “drops,” will give “permissions” to the student at the top of the “wait list.”  Some instructors will just wait until the first day of class before giving out any “permissions,”  which will be available by both those who have dropped the course and by those who are “no shows” at the first class.

NOTE:  To maintain your wait list status, you must attend the first day of class!

4.  How might I find out what level of course in which to enroll?

First read over the course syllabus and description found on our web page.  If you are still uncertain , contact the instructor(s) in regard to the various course levels and how they relate to your skill level.  If necessary, they will be able to assist you in determining which course level in which you should enroll.

5.  Who do I contact if I have a specific question about a class.

Your first choice would be to email the instructor.  Instructor emails are available under the contents link of this web page.  If there is no instructor listed or for some reason, you are unable to contact the instructor...email (jvinje@educaiton.wisc.edu) or  call (608-262-1690)  the PE Activity Program office.

6.  Where is the “Sports Center”?

The “Sports Center,” also referred to as “The Shell,” is located  at 1430  Monroe Street,  just east of Camp Randall Football Stadium.

7.  Should I dress for an activity class on the first day of class?

Generally, if the course is a full semester class, you would not dress for activity on the first day .  However, it is usually requested for Modular classes (those held for less than 15 weeks).  It will be listed in the timetable notes if dress is required on the first day.  Many times, instructors will email their class with this information if it is not the general rule.

8.  What do I do if I am going to miss the first day of class?

Contact the instructor and let them know the situation so they are aware that you are not planning to “drop” the class.

9.  If I don’t know where the building is located in which I have a P. E. Activity class, how or where do I get that information?

You can go to your “My UW” internet page and search for ‘Campus Map’.  If you still cannot locate what you need, contact the PE office, 262-1690.

10.  Do I have any options if I am unable to contact an instructor or the instructor does not respond to an email sent by me?

Yes, you can contact the P.E. Activity Office at 262-1690.  If the secretary cannot be of direct assistance, she will contact the instructor and get back to you as soon as possible.  If there is no answer you can leave a message.  It is always good to call back in 5 to 10 minutes if it is an urgent situation.  Often, the secretary is just away for a couple of minutes.  FYI: The secretary is out for lunch from 11:45 - 12:45.

11.  Do I get a locker?

Yes.  During class, a small cubical locker and combination lock will be assigned to you free of charge.   You will be encouraged to keep your gym clothes and shoes there during the school week.  You may use a tall locker during class and put your lock on it keeping your street clothing, books and valuables protected. Then, return your lock, gym clothing and shoes to your assigned locker for overnight keeping.

12.  Are shower facilities and towel service available?

Yes, you may purchase a towel for $10 that can be turned in to the towel room cage for a new clean dry towel upon use.  If you have classes at more than one facility (SERF, Gyn-Nat, Nielsen, Shell or Lathrop), you may carry your towel and exchange it at that second facility or you can purchase a 2nd towel for $10 for use at that facility.

13.  Can I take an Activity class Pass/Fail?

Yes.  You may want to take an activity class Pass/Fail if you are concerned about having the grade averaged into your GPA.  You do this through your Dean’s office.  Each school has specifics that they follow.  The instructor is not aware which students are on a letter grading system and which are “pass/fail.”  They grade every student with a letter grade and the registrar changes the letter grade to “S” for satisfactory, if you receive a letter grade better than a “D.”  If your grade is a “D” or below, your grade is changed to a “U” for unsatisfactory.

NOTE:  If your class starts late in a semester, be certain to register for pass/fail during the first few weeks of the semester as you may miss the “pass/fail” deadline if you wait until the first week of class.

14.   If I miss class can I make up the time?

There is an attendance policy that states, “If you miss more than 4 class hours your final grade will be lowered to the next grade level for each additional missed class.”  So you should be diligent about your attendance as it is almost impossible to make up the time.  Do contact your instructor regarding missed classes as they do have some discretionary power in making up time depending on  individual circumstances.

NOTE:  Enrolling late will automatically give you missed class hours!

15.           For Golf I (740-132) do I need my own clubs?

No.  Golf clubs are provided in class for you to use.  But, if you have clubs of your own and would prefer to use your own, you may bring them.
