Enrollment is limited to one PE Activity Course per semester until all students have had the opportunity to register. If you attempt to register for a second course, you will receive the message “prerequisites not met.” The exception to this is PE 100 - Exercise, Nutrition, & Health. Students can register for this course and still be eligible to register for another PE Activity Course. Students, wishing to take more than one PE Activity Course, should contact the instructor of the additional class and ask to be placed on the wait list for that course.
In courses in which there are multiple levels (e.g. Tennis I, II, & III), students must assess which skill level is appropriate. For further assistance in determining appropriate level of enrollment, course descriptions and syllabi are available under the Course link. The FAQs link on this web site may also be beneficial. With a few exceptions, there are no registration controls based on pre-requisites.
Wait lists for courses will be established when the course is closed to registration. To be added to a wait list, contact the instructor for that course. Contact information for staff members can be found under the Course link next to the course description for the specific course of interest or under the Contacts link of this web site. Students will be given priority to register from the wait list on a first come, first served basis.
Once on the wait list, students will be notified, by the instructor, if seats become available prior to the start of the semester. This notification will allow students to register at that time rather than wait until the beginning of the term. Students on the wait list, who are not contacted by the instructor, are still encouraged to attend the first day of class. Often this is when the instructor first becomes aware of seat availability. Additional seats usually become available due to registered “no shows.” Individuals who are on the wait list, but do not attend the first day of class, will forfeit their wait list position.
Students who have not requested to be placed on the wait list prior to the first day of class, should attend the first class session and make the request at this time.
Students are expected to attend all classes. If absent more than 4 class hours, the final grade will be lowered to the next letter grade for each additional class hour missed. The attendance requirement starts with the first class; if a student enrolls in the course after the semester has started, the missed classes are counted as absences.
Students MUST present their student ID when attending classes in a Recreational Sports Facility to gain access to the class.
The grade reflects the quality of all work done. To receive any grade, all course assignments must be completed. The grade is based on PERFORMANCE (not more than 75% of the course requirements) and KNOWLEDGE (to include written work, not to be less than 25% of the course requirements). The instructor will discuss specific objectives and methods of assessment at the beginning of the semester. A grade of AA@ will be awarded only for outstanding performance, skill, and knowledge. The attendance requirement will be used to make adjustments in final grades where necessary.
"F" will be given if course requirements are not met (attendance, completion of assignments, participation in evaluation procedures) or if the quality of the work is inferior.
A student who receives an "F" may repeat the same course in another semester. The second grade will affect the GPA but the first will remain on the transcript."I" will be an option in some unusual circumstances in which the student is prevented from participation in the final assessments, evaluation, or completion of course requirements. It will be the student=s responsibility to make arrangements with the instructor to make up the work missed before the "I" lapses into an "F". "I"s may not be made up by enrolling in the same course the following semester. Students who are unable to continue in a course due to injury or other medical reasons may wish to consider Adapted Fitness and Personal Training (740-125) as an alternative to dropping the course. Students may request approval from their Dean to drop a course after the drop deadline for medical or health reasons.
Students may register for Pass/Fail grading at their dean=s office during the first 4 weeks of the semester. The instructor for the course does not need to/should not be informed of your status. At the end of the semester, the instructor submits a letter grade to the registrar. If the grade you have earned is a “C” or above, the grade will be converted to an “S” on your transcript. If the letter grade submitted is a “D” or an “F,” the grade will be recorded as an “F” on your transcript.
With the exception of PE 100 (740-100 Exercise, Nutrition, & Health), PE Activity courses can not be audited. University policy does not allow audits for courses with lab or performance skills. Individuals may audit PE 100 as it is not a lab class or course with physical performance skills testing.
If a student repeats a PE Activity Program Course, the student should check with their School/College on how the credit(s) received for the course is handled. All Schools/Colleges do not count the PE Activity Program credits the same.
Many PE Activity Courses require vigorous activity which may be hazardous to the health of certain individuals, especially those with cardiopulmonary disease and those who have not recently engaged in strenuous exercise. Any costs as the result of injury or illness connected with participation in these courses are solely the responsibility of the student. Your instructor will discuss safety precautions appropriate to the activity and you will be asked to sign a statement that you understand the risks and procedures.
If you have a disability you believe requires accommodation, please notify the instructor prior to participation in any course activity. The PE Activity Program wishes to fully include persons with disabilities. If you need any special accommodations, please inform your instructor who will try to maintain the confidentiality of such information.Comments or Problems: webmanager@education.wisc.edu.
