It was a night to remember . . .
A record-setting 240 undergraduate scholarships, worth a total of nearly $500,000, were announced at the School of Education Undergraduate Honors Banquet, April 30.
More than 350 people gathered in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union for dinner and the awards ceremony.
Camera lights flashed as proud parents snapped photos of their students crossing the stage to receive their awards from Dean Underwood. And conversations were lively, as many scholarship recipients and their families had an opportunity to meet and say "thank you" to the people who support their scholarships.
The School’s undergraduate scholarships are made possible by gifts from its alumni and friends. These include estate gifts, such as one from the estate of Helen Pfuderer Smith, who was a member of the first class in the Department of Physical Education for Women.
Scholarships also are supported by gifts from current alumni, such as Jean Hastings. Mrs. Hastings, who for many years taught methods classes in science education for the School of Education, established a Science Teachers Scholarship in 1993. She is pictured with her husband, Robert, on the right in the top photo.
Students must complete an application process to be considered for these awards. Depending on the nature of a particular scholarship, recipients are selected either by departmental committees or by a committee representing the entire School.
