Movin' Minds urges 'healthy minds, healthy bodies'

Tuesday, August 05, 2008 -

Dozens of middleschoolers from across the Madison area came to UW-Madison campus in July to attend more than a dozen courses including exercise science, radio production, cartography and entomology as part of a new pre-college program called Movin’ Minds.

Art Department alumna and Olympic runner Suzy Favor Hamilton worked with the School of Education’s Education Outreach staff to put together the week-long program that emphasized “healthy bodies and healthy minds.”

The students started each morning with “Suzy Time,” participating in physical activities tailored to each student’s abilities. Hamilton also talked to the kids about nutrition such as how to make healthy meal and snack choices.

The students split into small groups led by an adult mentor that they stayed with for the entire week.

“(Movin’ Minds) gives them experiences that are engaging and interesting outside of school,” said program coordinator Erika Braunginn.

Below, students visit a labyrinth in Lathrop Hall put together by a group that took a relaxation techniques course.

Members of the same group show off the skills they learned in a radio production course hosted by WSUM student radio.
