After years of planning and preparation, the $34 million project to renovate and add to the Education Building on Bascom Hill has reached the construction phase.

On November 19, the State of Wisconsin opened construction bids, which came in significantly under estimates, clearing the way for the project to move forward as planned.

Many of the building occupants moved to temporary quarters last summer, leaving the Departments of Educational Policy Studies and Counseling Psychology and Education Academic Services Office there through the fall semester.

Those units moved out in early January, and, on January 19, the building was turned over to the general contractor, J.P. Cullen of Janesville, which has begun the on-site work.

The School of Education occupants are scheduled to return to the building for the fall 2010 semester. This project is being made possible by a generous gift from UW-Madison alumni Tashia and John Morgridge, who have been closely involved with the project.

Both the Education Building and Art Lofts projects have been designed by architectural/engineering teams from Hammel Green and Abrahamson Inc. of Milwaukee.
